Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--
This article describes how to restore Azure VM data from the recovery points stored in the Azure Backup Recovery Services vault.
To restore VM, make sure you have the required RBAC permissions.
Next, let's take a look at the things related to restore and how to restore.
1. Restore option
Azure backups provide several ways to restore VM.
Restore option
detailed information
Create a new virtual machine
Quickly create and start the basic VM from the restore point and run it.
You can specify the name of the VM, select the resource group and virtual network (VNet) where you want to place it, and specify the storage type.
New-restore disk
Recover the VM disk, which you can then use to create a new VM.
Azure backup provides a template to help you customize and create VM.
This option copies the VHD to the storage account that you specify. The restore job generates a template that users can download and use to specify custom VM settings and create a VM.
-the storage account should be located in the same location as the vault. If you do not have a storage account, create a storage account.
The storage account replication type is displayed. Area redundant storage (ZRS) is not supported.
Alternatively, users can attach disks to an existing VM or use PowerShell to create a new VM.
This option is useful if you want to customize VM, add configuration settings that did not exist at the time of backup, or add settings that must be configured using templates or PowerShell.
Replace existing
Users can restore the disk and use it to replace the disk on the existing VM.
The current VM must exist. If this option has been removed, it cannot be used.
Azure Backup takes a snapshot of the existing VM before replacing the disk. Snapshots are stored in the staging location that you specify. Then replace the existing disk connected to the VM with the selected restore point. Snapshots taken are copied to Vault and retained according to the specified retention policy.
Unencrypted managed VM supports replacement of existing versions. This feature is not supported on unmanaged disks, generic VM, or VM created with custom images.
If the number of disks in the restore point is more or less than the current VM, the number of disks in the restore point will only reflect the VM configuration.
two。 Select restore point
1) in the vault associated with the VM you want to restore, click backup items > Azure Virtual machines.
2) Click a VM. By default, the recovery points for the past 30 days are displayed on the VM dashboard. You can display recovery points for more than 30 days, or filter to find recovery points based on date, time range, and snapshot consistency of different types.
3) to restore VM, click restore VM.
4) Select the restore point to be used for recovery, and then click OK
3. Select VM restore configuration
In restore configuration, select the restore option:
Create. Use this option if you want to create a new VM. You can create a VM with simple settings, or you can restore the disk and create a custom VM.
Replace existing: use this option if you want to replace a disk on an existing VM.
Specify the settings for the selected restore option.
4. New-create VM
As one of the restore options, you can quickly create a VM using the basic settings of the restore point.
1) in restore configuration > New > restore Type, select create Virtual Machine.
2) in the virtual machine name, specify a VM that does not exist in the subscription.
3) in the Resources group, select an existing resource group for the new VM, or create a new resource group with a globally unique name. If you specify a name that already exists, Azure assigns the group the same name as VM.
4) in the virtual network, select the VNet where the VM will be placed. All VNets associated with the subscription will be displayed. Select the subnet. The first subnet is selected by default.
5) in Storage location, specify the storage type for VM.
6) in the restore configuration, select OK. In restore, click restore to trigger the restore operation.
Restore succeeded
5. Create a new restore disk
As the second restore option, you can create a disk from the restore point. Then using the disk, you can do one of the following:
Use the templates generated during the restore operation to customize settings and trigger VM deployment. You can edit the default template settings and submit the VM deployment template.
Attach the restored disk to the existing VM.
Use PowerShell to create a new VM from the restored disk.
1) in restore configuration > New > restore Type, select restore disk.
2) in the Resources group, select an existing resource group for the restored disk, or create a new resource group with a globally unique name.
3) in the storage account, specify the account to which you want to copy VHD. Make sure that the account is in the same area as the vault.
4) in the restore configuration, select OK. In restore, click restore to trigger the restore operation.
6. Replace an existing disk
As the third restore option, you can replace the existing VM disk with the selected restore point. View all restore options.
In the restore configuration, click replace existing.
In restore Type, select replace disk. This is the restore point that will be used to replace the existing VM disk.
In temporary location, specify where the snapshot of the current managed disk should be saved.
7. Track restore operation
When a restore operation is triggered, the backup service creates a job for tracking. Azure backups display notifications about jobs in the portal. If they are not visible, click the Notification symbol to view them.
The trace recovery is as follows:
1) to view the operation of the job, click the notification hyperlink. Alternatively, in Vault, click backup Job, and then click the relevant VM.
2) to monitor the progress of the restore, click any restore job with a status of "in Progress". This displays a progress bar with information about the progress of the restore:
Estimated restore time: initially provides the time required to complete the restore operation. As the operation progresses, the time it takes for the recovery operation to complete is reduced to zero.
Percentage of recovery. Displays the percentage of restore operations that have completed.
Number of bytes transferred: if you are restoring by creating a new VM, the number of bytes transferred based on the total number of bytes to be transferred is displayed.
9. Considerations after recovery
You need to be aware of the following after restoring VM:
The extension that occurred during the backup configuration is installed, but not enabled. If you find a problem, reinstall the extension.
If the backed up VM has a static IP address, the restored VM will have a dynamic IP address to avoid conflicts. You can add a static IP address to the restored VM.
The restored VM has no availability set. If you use the restore disk option, you can specify the availability set when you create a VM from disk using the provided template or PowerShell.
If you use a cloud-init-based Linux distribution (such as Ubuntu), the password will be blocked after the restore for security reasons. Use the VMAccess extension on the restored VM to reset the password. We recommend using SSH keys on these distributions, so you don't need to reset your password after a restore.
