Google's Waymo announced today that it will soon begin testing self-driving cars in Florida, driving on closed roads on rainy days, and in Miami public at the end of this month.

Waymo said the car would be manually driven by operators, giving the team the opportunity to collect real driving data in heavy rain.

During the summer hurricane season, Miami is one of the wettest cities in the United States, with an average annual rainfall of 157 centimeters. Rainy conditions and the resulting slippery roads can cause noise to the vehicle's sensors and change the habits of other human drivers on the road.

"the tests enable us to understand unique driving conditions and better deal with how Rain Water affects vehicle movement," the company said in a blog post. "both human-driven and self-driving cars need to be driven in many different weather conditions."

Waymo also announced that it would start production of L4 self-driving cars at a plant in southeastern Michigan. In addition, Waymo has partnered with Lyft to deploy 10 self-driving ride-hailing vehicles on its ride-hailing platform.

According to marketing firm ABI, as many as 8 million self-driving cars will enter the road in 2025, and about 20 million self-driving cars will be put into use in the United States by 2030.
