SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol, simple Network Management Protocol) consists of a set of network management standards, including an application layer protocol (application layer protocol), a database model (database schema) and a set of data objects. The protocol can support the network management system to monitor whether the devices connected to the network have any management concerns. The protocol is part of the internet protocol suite defined by the Internet Engineering working Group (IETF,Internet Engineering Task Force). Its predecessor is simple Gateway Monitoring Protocol (SGMP), which is used to manage communication lines. Subsequently, people made a lot of changes to SGMP, especially the addition of SMI and MIB: architecture that meet the definition of Internet, and the improved protocol is the famous SNMP. The goal of SNMP is to manage the software and hardware platforms produced by many manufacturers on the Internet Internet, so SNMP is also greatly influenced by the Internet standard network management framework.

SNMP has the following advantages:

? Automate network management. Network administrators can use the nodes on the SNMP platform to retrieve information, modify information, find faults, complete fault diagnosis, carry out capacity planning and generate reports.

? Shield the physical differences of different equipment and realize the automatic management of the products of different manufacturers. SNMP only provides the most basic function set, which makes the management task relatively independent of the physical characteristics of the managed equipment and the underlying networking technology, thus realizing the management of equipment from different manufacturers, which is especially suitable for use in small, fast and low-cost environments.

The working Mechanism of SNMP

SNMP network elements are divided into NMS and Agent.

? NMS (Network Management Station, Network Management Station) is a workstation that runs SNMP client programs, which can provide a very friendly man-machine interface and facilitate network administrators to complete most of the network management work. ? Agent is a process that resides on the device and is responsible for receiving and processing request messages from NMS. In some emergencies, such as a change in the state of the interface, Agent will also notify NMS.

NMS is the manager of SNMP network, and Agent is the manager of SNMP network. NMS and Agent interact and manage information through the SNMP protocol.

SNMP provides four basic operations:?

1) Get operation: NMS uses this operation to query the values of one or more objects in Agent.

2) Set operation: NMS uses this operation to reset the value of one or more objects in the Agent database (MIB,Management Information Base).

3) Trap operation: Agent uses this operation to send alarm information to NMS.

4) Inform operation: NMS uses this operation to send alarm messages to other NMS.
