Shulou(Shulou.com)06/03 Report--
After a long time of worrying about global IPv4 address exhaustion, the moment has finally come-all 4.3 billion IPv4 addresses have been allocated, which means that no more IPv4 addresses can be assigned to ISP and other large network infrastructure providers.
This process has foreseen since the 1980s that top-level addresses have actually been exhausted in 2012. At that time, all IPv4 address spaces were allocated to the five regional Internet registries, the African Network Information Center (AFRINIC) for Africa, the North American Network Information Center (ARIN) for Antarctica, Canada, parts of the Caribbean and the United States, and the Asia Pacific Internet Information Center (APNIC) for East Asia, Oceania, South and Southeast Asia. The Latin American Network Information Centre (LACNIC) targets most of the Caribbean and Latin America as a whole, and the European Network Information Centre (RIPE NCC) targets Europe, Central Asia, Russia and Western Asia.
Those regional Internet registrations soon began to run out. On April 15, 2011, Asia Pacific (APNIC) allocated the last IPv4 block to Europe, Middle East and Central Asia (RIPE NCC) on September 14, 2012, and the last IPv4 block to Latin America and the Caribbean (LACNIC) on June 10, 2014. September 24, 2015 for North America, until today, the European RIPE (World Internet Organization) NCC finally ran out of storage.
The message was announced in an email (posted by Nikolas Pediaditis) and read:
Dear colleagues.
Today, on November 25, 2019, UTC + 1 15:35, we made a final / 22 IPv4 allocation from the last remaining address in the available pool. Now, we have run out of IPv4 addresses.
For network operators, our announcement is not surprising-the RIPE community has long anticipated and planned to run out of IPv4. In fact, it is because of the responsible management of these resources by the community that we have been able to provide / 22 allocation to thousands of new networks in our service area after reaching the last / 8 in 2012.
In theory, running out of IPv4 addresses should mean that no new IPv4 devices can be added to Internet, but in practice, many factors will be mitigated.
The first is that ISP can reuse and recycle unused IPv4 addresses. The second reason is that because of NAT (Network address Translation), the same IP address can be used privately behind the ISP router. Finally, of course, there is the transition to IPv6, which should now establish a good order so that peer-to-peer connections can be made directly through Internet with a huge address space of 3.4x10 ^ 38.
