Openfiler installation process:

When testing openfiler, first install openfiler, shut down and then add a new hard drive to test. After installing openfiler in this test, 3 new hard drives were added. The virtual machine is configured as follows

The installation process starts, click enter

Skip CD detection.

Click next

Just select automatic partition.

The installation process is not technical and should be easy to understand.

Openfiler configuration

The user used by Openfiler for Web management is not the Root account we set up during installation, but a default built-in account openfiler. Its password defaults to password and needs to be modified after login. After entering the openfiler account information, click the "LogIn" button to enter the Openfiler Web management interface (a prompt will be displayed when you log in for the first time, and the management interface will be displayed by directly clicking the management link). After entering the management interface, the first thing you see is the system status information. It shows the resource consumption and hardware information of the server. Next, for security reasons, we first need to change the administrator's password. Click the Accounts tab on the page. Then click the AdminPassword connection in the right pane, enter the default administrator password and the new administrator password twice in the left pane, and click the "Submit" button to finish changing the administrator password.

Next we will initially configure Openfiler to establish NAS or iSCSI shared storage for it, which can be accessed by ESXServer or other hosts as follows

Then select the "Volumes" tab, click the Block Devices link in the right pane, and a list of disks installed on Openfiler will be displayed on the left side of the page. Click / dev/sdb to set up the second disk.

Since we did not have any partition settings for the second disk during the previous installation, all of its space is available for partitions. Select "RAID array member" in the partition type. Then click the "Create" button to create a new partition. Of course, we can select physical olume to create a physical volume. In this test, we choose to create a RAID array member, and after waiting for a period of time, the partition information just created will be displayed. And so on, do the same for the remaining / dev/sdb,/dev/sdc to create a partition.

Create the software RAID.

Create a volume group (volume group), in which multiple physical volumes can be added, so that we can provide storage space across multiple partitions and disks, thus enabling flexible management of storage space. In a sense, this is also a way to implement storage virtualization. In this test, we added the RAID5 we just created to the newly created volume group.

The newly created volume group VG1 appears on the left side of the screen, and then click the "Add Volume" link in the right pane to create a new volume on this volume group.

Next we will create an iSCSI volume in this volume group for use by the ESX Server host. It is important to note that iSCSI must be selected in the volume type. In this experiment, we allocated 61% of the space to iSCSI volumes dedicated to hosting virtual machine files. 39% of the space is used to store ISO files. When the setup is complete, click the "Create" button to complete the establishment of the iSCSI volume.

After a short wait, we can delete the volume, edit the configuration, and create a snapshot by clicking the link to the right of the volume information. By editing the volume, we can also allocate the free space in the volume group to it, thus realizing the expansion of the volume.

Next we select the "Services" tab and click the "Enable" link to the right of "iSCSI target server" to start the iSCSI target service. When clicked, the iSCSI target service status is displayed as "Enabled".

Then we select the "Volumes" tab, click the "iSCSI Targets" link in the right pane, and then click the "Add" button to create a new iSCSI Target. When you are finished, you will display the information and configuration page of the volume you just created. Then we select the "LUN Mapping" tab of the iSCSI Targets configuration page, map the iSCSI volume to the "Map" button in the newly created Target click page, and complete the iSCSI volume to Target mapping.

The mapping information you just created is then displayed, which can be cancelled by clicking the "Unmap" button. Next, we select the "Network ACL" tab of the iSCSI Targets configuration page to set the access to Target.

Next, a network access list is displayed, where we can see the records we set up earlier for ESXI-1. Change the option on the right to "Allow" and click the "Update" button below to complete the setting. It is important to note that every ESXServer host connected to Openfiler must be set up like this to ensure its normal connection.

In chap authentication, the host needs to provide a user name and password. This password is the user name and password that needs to be provided to connect to LUN. You must pay attention to this.

We can also do chap authentication for discovering ISCSI target, and we also need to enter a user name and password

It should be noted that I did not prepare the ESXI host for this test. Please refer to other documents about the ISCSI configuration on the ESXI host side. However, the configuration of the openfiler side can refer to the above configuration. The following test uses win7's iscsi initiator to discover target, so the new chap authentication password on the openfiler side must use a 12-character password. This is Microsoft's password length requirement.
