Shulou(Shulou.com)06/01 Report--

Today, Jeff Barr, AWS's chief evangelist, revealed on his blog that the Amazon consumer business has officially completed the migration of the Oracle database, shutting down the final Oracle database. Amazon migrates nearly 7500 Oracle databases and 75 PB-level databases to AWS database services, including Amazon DynamoDB,Amazon Aurora,Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) and Amazon Redshift.

Database has been the subject of debate between Amazon and Oracle in recent years. Oracle founder and CTO Larry Ellison has promoted on several occasions that Amazon buys Oracle's database every year. AWS is not to be outdone, as early as a year ago at the AWS re:Invent 2018 conference, AWS CEO Andy Jassy bluntly said that by the end of 2019, Amazon will completely abandon the use of Oracle database, 97% of the "mission-critical database" will be running on Amazon's own services.

Today, the Amazon consumer business completes the internal migration of the Oracle database business, which is a landmark event in Amazon.

According to Jeff Barr, the migration of the Amazon internal database has been going on for several years, with more than 100 teams from the consumer business unit involved in the migration. This includes customer-oriented well-known brands and websites such as Alexa,Amazon Prime,Amazon Prime Video,Amazon Fresh,Kindle,Amazon Music,Audible,Shopbop,Twitch and Zappos, as well as internal team technology such as AdTech,Amazon Fulfillment, consumer payments, customer returns, catalog systems, providing experiences, digital devices, external payments, finance, InfoSec, marketing, ordering and retail systems.

According to Jeff Barr, the migration gives each internal team the freedom to choose the dedicated AWS database service that best suits its needs, as well as better control over its budget and cost model. Low latency services have been migrated to DynamoDB and other highly scalable non-relational databases, such as Amazon ElastiCache; transactional relational workloads with high data consistency requirements have been moved to Aurora and RDS; analytics workloads have been migrated to cloud data warehouse Redshift.

The following is a comparison of cost, performance, administrative overhead, and so on before and after migration:

Cost reduction: we have greatly reduced database costs by more than 60% according to the agreed discount rate according to the size. Customers periodically report 90% cost savings from switching from Oracle to AWS.

Performance improvement: consumer-facing application latency has been reduced by 40%.

Administrative overhead: switching to managed services reduces database management overhead by 70%.

Jeff Barr also introduces the migration results through some migration examples:

Ad: after the migration, the team, with the support of RDS, was able to double the size of the database fleet (and its throughput) in minutes to accommodate peak traffic. This scale-up will take months before the migration.

Buyer fraud: the team moved 40 TB of data in just one hour of downtime and achieved the same or better performance at half the cost, supported by Amazon Aurora.

Financial ledger: the team transferred 120 TB of data, reduced latency by 40%, reduced costs by 70%, and reduced expenses by the same 70%, all supported by DynamoDB.

Wallet: the team migrated more than 10 billion records to DynamoDB, reducing latency by 50% and operating costs by 90% in the process.

Amazon has completed the migration of Oracle database internally, but Oracle database is still included in the external AWS cloud database service RDS. Because Oracle has a deep user base, the market still attaches great importance to Oracle database services.

Considering that AWS, as the first cloud service provider in the global cloud computing market share, occupies the market opportunity in the big wave of cloud computing, it is bound to promote its own database services more in the future. But Oracle will not sit idly by. Although it has missed the opportunity in the cloud computing market, it has recently announced a strategic partnership with arch-rival Microsoft. Microsoft, as the second largest cloud service provider in the world, is relatively weak in the database field in recent years. The cooperation with Oracle will undoubtedly strengthen the fight against AWS.

In any case, I am afraid that the database business dispute between AWS and Oracle will continue and will intensify.
