Copy the database files and log files that need to be attached to a folder that has already been created. For educational purposes, we copy this file into the DATA folder, the directory generated when SQL Server was installed. In the window below, right-click the database object and select Attach from the shortcut menu to open the Attach Database window.

In the Attach Database window, click the Add button in the middle of the page to open the window for locating database files. In this window, locate the database file directory just copied to the DATA folder of SQL Server (the data file does not have to be placed in the DATA directory), and select the database file to be attached (suffix.MDF, as shown in the following figure).

Clicking OK completes the setup of the attached database file. At this time, the information that needs to be attached to the database is listed in the Additional Database window (as shown in the following figure). If you need to modify the attached database name, modify the database name in the Attach As text box. We're using defaults here, so click OK to complete additional tasks for the database.

After completing the above operations, we can see the database student_Mis just attached in the Object Explorer of SSMS (as shown below).

SQL databases can be expanded, contracted, detached, and attached. You can see that this method is useful if you want to migrate a database to a different SQL Server instance on the same computer or to a SQL Server system on another computer.
