Chooseco has released the famous "choose your own Adventure" series, apparently designed to prevent independent game developers from using the phrase "choose your own adventure". It sent trademark infringement notices to the Itch.io game store. So far, they have suspended four game pages.

This afternoon, Itch.io founder Leaf Corcoran introduced the acquisition to developers. "Choiceco will issue a deletion notification when warning any developer who uses the word 'choose your own adventure' to describe their game," he wrote on Twitter. Corcoran told The Verge that these games include the Purrfectapawc Apocalypse, "dogs dating at the end of the world choose your own adventure game", a game called "choose your own date simulated text adventure", and an unofficial boy game called "choose your own adventure" Luke Burns, the New Yorker, a series of "adventures of your choice", no matter what you choose, you will not be killed by a werewolf, the plot is self-evident.

Cochran said Isio was not trying to confront Choiceco on this issue. "We will never try to represent Choiceco's behavior in a negative way. We know that they need to protect their brands and are willing to work with them to ensure that trademarks are not infringed." Choiceco apparently contacted the platform about four months ago, which led to a suspension of the game. Corcoran says his platform is trying to work with developers to remove infringing content. For now, however, these pages have been suspended to avoid problems with iQI Chooseco web hosts. Chooseco didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Choiceco has previously implemented the "choose your own adventure" trademark. In 2007, it sued Chrysler for using the term in its Gyibug marketing campaign, and recently accused Netflix of infringing its trademark "Black Mirror: Bandesnage." But both cases involve high-profile projects of large companies, and the above games are relatively small and vague.

Mainstream publishers have found an ingenious way to avoid trademarks. For example, an elective book of Gravity Falls (Gravity Falls) is called "your own choice, your own adventure" novel. And you can't officially mark the game as "adventure of your choice" on Itch.io; it will automatically be converted to "interactive novel".

Even so, Itch.io 's search for "choose your own adventure" still produces a lot of results. (the general acronym "CYOA" apparently went unnoticed.) This is a widely accepted informal genre name, while Itch.io is a platform that supports alternative games provided by independent developers for free. However, Choiceco's notice of withdrawal makes it clear that these games are still within the attention of trademark holders.
