Now more and more enterprises choose to build or migrate their systems to the cloud to enjoy the flexible computing and flexible scalability brought by the public cloud. However, many users will have a small problem before migrating the system to the cloud: when the system is running locally, you can monitor the system through tools such as zibbix,SCOM to ensure the stable operation of the system. How should I monitor my application after migrating to the cloud? In fact, you don't have to worry, because every cloud platform will set aside an interface for users to obtain monitoring data. Azure is no exception. In azure, users can use portal to obtain the monitoring information they need, such as CPU utilization, RAM utilization and disk IO of virtual machines. At the same time, they can also set some actions on the monitored data, such as triggering email alarm when the utilization of CPU reaches a certain percentage.

Microsoft provides users with a monitoring function called Azure Monitor in Azure, which provides a comprehensive solution for collecting, analyzing, and processing telemetry data from cloud and local environments to maximize application availability and performance. It can help us understand the performance of the application and actively identify problems that affect the application and the resources it depends on.

As you can see from the figure above, Azure Monitor can collect data from local and Azure and other sources in the cloud, and the data collected can be roughly divided into applications, any operating systems and services of application dependencies, and the platform itself of azure.

Application monitoring data: data about the performance and functionality of the code written, regardless of the platform. Guest OS monitoring data: data about the operating system running the application. This application can be run in Azure, in other clouds, or locally. Azure resource monitoring data: data about the operations of Azure resources. Azure subscription monitoring data: data about Azure subscription operations and management, as well as data about the health and operation of Azure itself. Azure tenant monitoring data: data about tenant-level Azure services (such as Azure Active Directory) operations.

Azure Monitor mainly collects two types of data, namely Metrics and logs. Metrics data is a digital value, which mainly refers to various indicator data, such as the CPu utilization rate mentioned above. Logs is the various logs of the platform or application, such as system log, application log and so on.

For the collected Metrics and Logs data, you can use the query for analysis, through the query can quickly retrieve, merge and analyze the collected data. At the same time, the queried data can be connected to different platforms, thus giving play to different values. For example, we can make different visual icons according to different requirements and display them in azure's Dashboard. As shown in the following figure:

In addition, we can also use the data for operations such as automatic scaling of the application (horizontal or vertical expansion of the application when a threshold is triggered) or alerts.

In addition to the above, Azure Monitor supports the use of multiple API to read and write metrics and logs from / to Azure Monitor, as well as access to generated alerts. You can also configure and retrieve alerts. In this way, custom solutions integrated with Azure Monitor can be generated almost unrestricted
