China's big three smartphone makers are working together to develop a new wireless file transfer protocol that can work between their respective devices. According to Wechat posts on Xiaomi's official MIUI account, Xiaomi's MIUI, Oppo's ColorOS and Vivo's FuntouchOS-- are all based on Android-which will integrate peer-to-peer systems.

The protocol will use Bluetooth pairing devices and should be able to transmit data up to 20MB/s, indicating that it uses Wi-Fi at the back end, just like Apple's proprietary interspace delivery system. Xiaomi's post said that other smartphone manufacturers can apply to join the current alliance trio. A beta version of the service will be released at the end of this month.

Google has tried to launch an interspace delivery service for Android with varying degrees of success. The 2011 Android 4.0, which includes Android Beam and relies on NFC for device pairing, will be removed from the upcoming Android Q. the company's new Google Files (formerly Files Go) app provides file transfer via Bluetooth pairing, while Android Q itself will integrate "quick sharing" features similar to shared tables.

Fast Share is reportedly a feature of Google's Play service, which may explain why Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo are working together to launch their own version. According to the latest data from Counterpoint Research, the three companies account for about half of the Chinese smartphone market-- 49% last quarter-- meaning they have a large addressable user base and run non-Google versions of Android. The big question is whether Huawei, which had a 34% market share last quarter, will be tempted.
