Install Filelight

Filelight is part of the KDE application and is pre-installed on the KDE-based Linux distribution.

If you are using a non-KDE distribution, the official repository contains Filelight, so you can install it using the default package manager.

In Arch Linux and its derivative versions, such as Antergos and Manjaro Linux, Filelight can be installed as follows.

$sudo pacman-S filelight

In Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint

After installation, start Filelight from the menu or from the application launcher.

Filelight graphically represents your file system as a set of concentric ring segments.

As you can see, Filelight shows the usage of / and / boot file systems on disk by default.

You can also select individual folders that are scanned to see disk usage for that particular folder. To do this, go to "Filelight-> Scan-> Scan Folder" and select the folder to scan.

Filelight excludes the following directories when scanning:

/ dev

/ proc

/ sys

/ root

This option helps skip directories that you may not have permission to read, or folders that belong to the virtual file system, such as / proc.

If you want to add folders to this list, go to "Filelight-> Settings-> Scanning" and click the "Add" button and select the folder you want to add.

Similarly, to remove a folder from this list, select the folder and click "Remove".

If you want to change the appearance of Filelight, please go to the "Settings-> Appearance" column and change the color scheme according to your preference.

Each segment in the radial graph is represented by a different color. The following figure shows the entire radial layout of the / file system. To see complete information about files and folders, simply hover the mouse pointer over them.

Simply click on the appropriate section to browse the file system. To view the disk usage of a file or folder, simply click them to get the full disk usage of that particular folder or file.

Not only the local file system, Filelight can also scan remote and removable disks. If you use any KDE-based Linux distribution, it can be integrated into file managers such as Konqueror, Dolphin, and Krusader.

Unlike the CLI utility, you don't have to use any additional parameters or options to view the results in an easy-to-read (rather than garbled) format. By default, Filelight automatically displays disk usage in an easy-to-read format.
