Rank One said it would offer new facial recognition technology to all active customers free of charge.

The company says the algorithm used in the new system is completely different from the standard facial recognition system and is specially designed for people who wear masks.

It is difficult to determine how many companies and government agencies in the United States use Rank One products. Its technology is resold by companies linked to the police and federal agencies, such as DataWorks Plus and securePlanet. DataWorksPlus's California contract includes an algorithm to access RankOne and the ability to search for 15 million citizens.

However, like traditional facial recognition systems, the accuracy of recognition is also a problem. Rank One shows that in a controlled environment, when the face faces the camera, the system's "FNMR" (the frequency at which the system does not match) is only 1.5%.

When the face does not face the camera, the FNMR value jumps to 15%. These numbers cannot explain false positives, and according to the numbers provided by Rank One, the accuracy of the algorithm decreases as the scope of use expands. In 10, 000 eye cycle recognition searches, the false positive rate was 1.5 per cent, but after 1 million searches, the ratio rose to 5 per cent.

Rank One is not the first company to invest in periocular recognition. Although it is usually deployed in a laboratory environment where images are taken by professionals, recent studies have shown that it is a feasible method of facial recognition.

Today's eye recognition may not be smart enough, but one thing is clear: it won't be long before you can be "blocked" by a mask.
