Use Explorer to mount and eject an ISO image

By default, the default opener for .iso image files in Windows 10 is directly associated with Windows Explorer, so the easiest way is to directly double-click the ISO file to achieve automatic mount, of course, you can also right-click the ISO file and select "load" to achieve mount.

If the third-party software currently installed in Windows 10 is associated with an .iso file, it cannot be mounted directly by double-clicking, and the "mount" option does not appear after right-clicking. At this point, you can manually load ISO by clicking "Open by"-"Windows Explorer" in the right-click pop-up shortcut menu.

If you want to change the iso file format association back to the default settings of Windows 10, that is, associate to Windows Explorer.

After the ISO is loaded, Windows 10 automatically creates a virtual optical drive and assigns a drive letter, which we can navigate directly through the left pane and see the contents.

To uninstall the loaded ISO after use, simply find the virtual optical drive letter automatically generated by Windows 10 in this computer, right-click and select "eject".

Use PowerShell to mount and eject an ISO image

In addition to the graphical interface, Windows 10 also supports the use of PowerShell command line to load and pop ISO images. The author personally believes that this method should be mainly suitable for Server Core, Nano Server and other scenarios.

Open PowerShell and directly use the following command to complete the ISO mount:

Mount-DiskImage-ImagePath "E:\ windows_10_1607.iso"

You can eject the mounted ISO using the following command:

Dismount-DiskImage-ImagePath "E:\ windows_10_1607.iso"
