Shulou(Shulou.com)12/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, December 20 (Xinhua)-- "Halo VR" has always been an obstacle for many players, and even if they adjust their settings or choose certain types of games, some players still can't avoid being turned upside down in the virtual world. However, Meta's latest upper-body tracking feature may offer hope for solving this problem.
In the December 2023 Meta Quest V60 update, a much anticipated feature, upper body tracking, was introduced. The technology uses Meta Quest 3's camera to capture the movements of the player's arms, shoulders and torso, and reflects these movements in real time in VR games, allowing players to achieve more natural body expression in all types of games.
Surprisingly, in addition to improving game immersion, the upper body tracking function can also help solve a major pain point in the VR world-motion sickness. CTOnews.com noted that BattleAxeVR, a well-known VR developer, wrote on the social platform that the feature made the virtual movement of games such as "Ancient Scroll 5 VR" more natural and eliminated the discomfort of some players who were prone to fainting.
BattleAxeVR explained that the tracking of the upper body is highly consistent with the way the body moves naturally. In short, the liquid catheter in our inner ear is very sensitive to gravity and forward and backward motion. When players move virtually in a VR game, these catheters do not get the same stimulation as when the body moves in real life, triggering a motion sickness response.
Fortunately, the upper body tracking function can be easily integrated into old and new games through the new "upper body tracking SDK". Players with game PC and "Ancient Scroll 5 VR" can use BattleAxeVR's "OK Cloud Streamer" tool to be the first to experience this new feature.
In addition to eliminating motion sickness, upper body tracking can also make social interaction in multiplayer games more natural. Devin Reimer, former CEO of Owlchemy Labs, pointed out that the feature is also friendly to players who are sitting and playing games. In games that support this technology, players can naturally tilt and twist their bodies to make virtual socializing more realistic.
Reimer stresses that this is especially important for multiplayer games because the social message of looking at a person is very different from turning to the other person's body to show attention. In contrast, the commonly used body tracking technology is often stiff, even if the use of AI and other means to simulate body movements, will also appear to lack a sense of reality.
Although the early DecaGear PCVR head display tried to track body movements through the camera, its function was limited to hip movements. Meta's new technology can track the entire upper body, but no mature solution has been found to use the camera for leg tracking.
Meta's upper body tracking function not only enhances the immersion and realism of VR games, but also promises to solve the motion sickness problem that has plagued players for years. With the development of related technology, the VR world may become more real and natural, allowing players to really immerse themselves.
