CTOnews.com, December 18 / PRNewswire-FirstCall-Asianet /-- the Pole to Pole (Crossing Polar) expedition team announced this morning that on December 15 this year, a couple of British explorers successfully arrived in Antarctica in an electric car that crossed the poles.

The couple, Chris and Julie, set out from the Arctic in March to drive an all-electric SUV Ariya owned by Nissan, but the car was modified by an Icelandic refitting company to use it as a proof of concept for future electric vehicle modifications, eventually hoping to replace the diesel cars currently used in Antarctic research and scientific research.

The car was replaced with 39-inch tires, retained the original car power system, suspension system, and added some bottom reinforcement devices. The couple reached the South Pole in the middle of this month after a difficult journey of nine months and 17000 miles (CTOnews.com Note: 27358.85 km).

The couple initially planned to use trailers equipped with small windmills to recharge their cars in the polar regions, but the trailers could not be used on Arctic roads. After arriving at the South Pole, the two use solar panels to help recharge the vehicle, or use generators to power the car.

They crossed North and South America one after another, and finally reached Antarctica. In addition, the two men also equipped a folding tent for the car to keep the car warm when parked and to improve charging efficiency. Finally, the two men successfully reached the South Pole at an altitude of 2835 meters on December 15.

CTOnews.com note: because the team shut down satellite communications near the pole, the news was announced this morning Beijing time.
