On June 20, 2019, the third Enterprise Container Innovation Conference (Enterprise Container Innovation Conference, hereinafter referred to as ECIC) hosted by Rancher Labs (hereinafter referred to as Rancher) was held at the Sheraton Hotel in Beijing. This year's ECIC has a large scale, with a total of 17 keynote speeches throughout the day, attracting nearly 1,000 container technology enthusiasts, and more than 10000 viewers watched the event on the live broadcast platform online.

Technical leaders from more than a dozen enterprises, including Rancher, Aliyun, Baidu Yun, Ping an Technology, China Unicom, Flying loan Financial Technology, China Life Insurance, SmartX, Huatai Insurance, Xiamen Airlines, JFrog, New Oriental, Cisco and so on, attended this ECIC, bringing a wonderful sharing of practical experience on corporate container projects and a sharing of corporate containerization experiences for container technology enthusiasts participating in the conference.

Close to the needs of container users to promote the continuous innovation of Chinese containers

Liang Sheng, co-founder and CEO of Rancher, said that the development of container technology is cyclical, and Kubernetes is moving from start-up to maturity, becoming a commodity widely used by cloud computing service providers and data centers. However, the development of container technology is endless, and user demand is not only the driving force of container development, but also the key element to maintain the continuous innovation of container technology.

Liang Sheng uses the example of K3s, the lightest Kubernetes distribution in history, released by Rancher in March 2019 as an example: "in the past year, dozens of enterprise customers who have partnered with Rancher have expressed to us that they think Kubernetes is an ideal platform for managing edge infrastructure, but they are not willing to invest a lot of resources in their edge devices to run a mature Kubernetes platform. K3s provides these teams with a smaller Kubernetes distribution than 512MB RAM, which is very suitable for edge computing cases. "

At the conference, Rancher also brought three surprise products to container enthusiasts on the spot. one is the new generation containerized distributed storage project Longhorn, which is a new open source distributed fast storage method based on cloud and container deployment. Second, the release of Rancher China Enterprise Edition Pandaria,Pandaria is an enterprise version of Rancher Kubernetes management platform for China, which aims to continuously meet the rapid and flexible needs of the Chinese market. The main functions include Harbor image repository integration, support for Audit log audit logs, more optimization support for domestic public clouds, etc. Third, the release and functional demonstration of Rancher 2.3 Preview has been carried out. In the upcoming version of Rancher 2.3, Rancher will officially support Windows Kubernetes, image warehouse, image scanning, service grid, Google login, cluster template, cluster security scanning and cluster automatic expansion and reduction.

Deeply ploughing the ecology of partners and jointly empowering cloud primary industries

As the largest cloud computing service provider in China, Aliyun has the largest practical experience in cloud native applications in the industry, serving enterprises and institutions in the Internet, finance, government and other fields. Yi Li, director of research and development of Ali Cloud Container Services, stressed: "in public clouds, hybrid clouds, or IoT scenarios where clouds, edges and ends are widely interconnected, more standardized and efficient delivery of applications is an important value that cloud native technology brings to enterprises."

It is worth mentioning that Aliyun and Rancher already reached a cooperation in the public cloud container project last year, and Rancher can implement the hosting service of Aliyun Kubernetes. At this conference, Yi Li revealed that Aliyun will cooperate with Rancher at a deeper level in the future to jointly preach cloud native services and provide easier-to-use container technology for global enterprises.

Another highlight of the conference was the launch of strategic partnerships and joint solutions by SmartX and Rancher, the industry's leading super-convergence vendors. The solution revolves around the "production ready" challenges faced by the user container environment. Based on SmartX's data center operating system SMTX OS for large-scale virtualization and containers, it covers its feature-rich and production-tested virtualization, distributed storage and other modules. It can provide full-stack solutions from container, orchestration to virtualization, storage and management in a single system through super-convergence. It can also be deployed separately as persistent storage to cooperate with the K8s cluster.

Kuyinan, director of marketing and strategic cooperation of SmartX, said: "SmartX is very pleased to form a strategic cooperation with Rancher in the container field. Rancher's deep understanding of professional technology and user needs is completely consistent with SmartX Make IT Simple's concept. I believe that this joint release of the solution will bring greater value to users."

In addition, Rancher also demonstrated strong ecological partnership capacity at this conference. Baidu Cloud, JFrog, Cisco and other technology partners have all reached a long-term ecosystem cooperation with Rancher, and Rancher will join hands with partners to actively promote the construction of container ecosystem and jointly promote innovation in container technology and cloud computing.

Take the needs of users as the core to promote the containerization of enterprises.

In the sharing of enterprise containerization practice at the conference, the technical leaders of enterprises in different industries gave their answers respectively.

Ping an Technology CTO and chief architect Fang Guowei pointed out that in recent years, containers have been widely adopted by enterprises because of their lightweight, flexible, easy to manage, easy to migrate and other characteristics, such as a high-speed formula × × stands out, which has become a general trend in the process of enterprise cloud. Therefore, in the next 3 years, Ping an Cloud will focus on container construction, solve the problem of rapid container delivery, and provide support for micro-services.

As one of the three major operators in China, China Unicom has the leading big data platform. Wang Zhijun, deputy general manager of China Unicom Group Informatization, shared: "through research, exploration and practice, we found that the technical route of Kubernetes+Docker is more in line with the actual needs of Unicom. It supports almost all types of container business, and it is based on Unicom's technology selection that we introduce Rancher product deployment and Kubernetes cluster management functions. To provide stronger container technology and container service support for Unicom's containerized big data cloud platform. "

For Chen Dingwei, vice president of Flying loan Financial Technology, the first thing to face is that the data of the financial industry has more stringent safety and high standards than other industries, while supporting the core business of Flying loan Financial Technology is also the fundamental demand, while the DB of the traditional model system has been unable to keep up with the pace of micro-service containerization in operation and maintenance, research and development, and product delivery. Through continuous innovation, Flying loan combines the current product R & D system. Flying loan self-developed middleware, under the condition of meeting the standards and business requirements of the financial field, carries out the containerization of production DB, which brings 10x DB delivery efficiency and the ultimate flexible expansion capacity, and solves the problem that the efficiency gap between DB and application service standards in the financial field is too big.

Zhang Qingnan, senior architect at China Life Research and Development Center, said that from 2017, China Life officially began to use container technology to build PaaS platform "Daokeyun", combined with continuous integration / delivery technology to achieve full process automation of R & D and comprehensive management of application containers. By 2019, Daokeyun has supported the production and operation of 15 key systems of China Life and managed more than 4800 application containers. " The application of container technology has promoted the optimization and control of China Life's entire R & D process, greatly shortened the iterative cycle of the software, and carried the application in the way of container deployment, realizing elastic scaling and rapid application construction and deployment. "

The cooperation between Xiamen Airlines and Rancher can be traced back to 2 years ago. In 2017, Xiamen Airlines completed the Xiamen Airlines cloud computing platform project and built a trinity Xiamen aviation cloud computing platform based on Rancher, IaaS and CMP. "the development of e-commerce in the aviation industry has given birth to a large number of business requests for access, and the platform needs to have strong stability and automatic resiliency, while the original traditional development model and software development model can no longer meet the existing needs." Zhou Zhao, systems engineer and head of cloud platform of Xiamen Aviation Information Department, shared: "under such circumstances, we found Rancher and worked together to create a supporting platform for Xiamen Airlines'e-commerce strategy through independent research and development and the perfect combination of micro-service architecture and Rancher container platform."

Also in 2017, New Oriental began to explore the use of containerization means to service the middleware business. Based on Rancher 1.6 using ES; 2019, New Oriental once again began to expand the service of middleware, using Kafka, ES and Redis based on Kubernetes. Jiang Jiang, head of platform architecture of New Oriental Information Management Department, concluded: "the use of containerization means to service middleware effectively improves the work efficiency of the operation and maintenance team and shortens the software development process."

Generally speaking, the wonderful sharing of these enterprises on containerization fully demonstrates the great influence of Rancher in the container field, as well as the joint promotion of many industries.

look into the future

It has been nearly 5 years since the establishment of Rancher. In just a few years, Rancher has quickly become a leading provider of container management software in the industry, providing enterprise-oriented container landing solutions for more than 20000 enterprise users.
