CTOnews.com December 14, Intel announced the 5th generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processor at today's Let AI Everywhere event.

The fifth-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor family delivers a significant leap in performance and energy efficiency: an average performance improvement of 21% over the same thermal design power range and up to 36% performance per watt across a range of workloads compared to the previous generation. For customers who follow a typical five-year refresh cycle and upgrade from earlier generation processors, TCO can be reduced by up to 77%.

Intel claims that Xeon Scalable processors are the industry's leading mainstream data center processors with built-in AI accelerators, while the new fifth-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors are able to fine-tune large language models with up to 20 billion parameters and improve their inference performance by 42%. At this stage, Intel Xeon Scalable processors are also the only CPUs with MLPerf training and inference benchmarks that consistently improve performance.

Thanks to built-in AI accelerators, optimized software and enhanced telemetry capabilities, Intel Xeon Scalable processors enable communications service providers, Content Delivery Network and a wide range of vertical markets including retail, healthcare and manufacturing to deploy demanding solutions for network and edge workloads more flexibly and efficiently.

At today's event, IBM said that the fifth-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor delivered a 2.7-fold increase in network query throughput on its watsonx.data platform compared to test data for the previous-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor. Google Cloud, which will deploy 5th generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors next year, notes that Palo Alto Networks has tripled its threat detection performance based on deep learning models thanks to accelerators built into 4th generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors in Google Cloud. Independent game studio Gallium Studios uses the Numenta AI platform running on Intel Xeon Scalable processors to improve inference performance by 6.5x over GPU-based cloud instances, saving costs and reducing latency for its AI-based game Proxi. This high performance also opens up new possibilities for unlocking leading AI capabilities in data centers, clouds, and global networks and edge applications.
