CTOnews.com December 14 news, the UK Biobank (UK Biobank) published the latest research results, found that smoking can lead to brain atrophy and premature aging, and can not be reversed after quitting smoking.

HealthyplaceUK Biobank analyzed 32094 European participants and revealed a direct link between smoking, genetic susceptibility and reduced brain volume, a study that helps explain why smokers experience cognitive decline and an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

Quitting smoking prevents further brain tissue loss, but it does not restore the brain to its original size. Smoking speeds up brain aging because people's brains naturally shrink with age, the researchers said.

The results showed that smoking history, brain size and genetic risk were correlated pairwise. Moreover, the relationship between smoking and brain volume depends on dose, with the more cigarettes a person smokes per day, the smaller their brain volume.
