Shulou(Shulou.com)12/24 Report--

CTOnews.com news on December 13, usually, the female green honey sparrow (Green Honeycreeper) is green as a whole, while the male is blue. Amateur ornithologist John Murillo (John Murillo) recently discovered a rare hermaphroditic green honey Finch with a semi-green and semi-blue body.

Murillo photographed this rare green honey sparrow at Demostrativa Don Miguel Reserva Natural near Caldas, Colombia, between October 2021 and June 2023.

Professor Hamish Hamish Spencer, a zoologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand, recently noticed the photos taken by Murillo, which made him very interested and went to Colombia to observe.

This bilateral hermaphroditism is very rare, showing male characteristics on one side of the organism and female characteristics on the other.

This phenomenon occurs in many animal groups, especially those with sexual dimorphism (meaning that there are significant differences in appearance between the sexes).

The main reason for the emergence of bilateral hermaphroditism in birds is an error in the meiosis (cell division) of the egg, which is then double fertilized by two different spermatozoa.

This is the second hermaphroditic green honey Finch ever recorded, and the last record dates back to 1914.
