CTOnews.com, December 13, the latest research by Chinese scientists has found that Bifidobacterium longum with a-L-arabinofuranosidase (abfA) gene cluster can alleviate host functional constipation by improving the efficiency of intestinal flora in the utilization of arabinoglycan.

Figure source: WikiMedia's discovery provides a new target and idea for the treatment of functional constipation and other intestinal dysfunction, and the related results are published in the internationally renowned journal Cell Host & Microbe.

The study was jointly studied by Academician Chen Wei and Professor Zhai Qixiao, School of Food, Jiangnan University, and Professor Zhang Jiachao, School of Food Science and Engineering, Hainan University.

CTOnews.com note: functional constipation (function constipation,FC) is a functional bowel disease characterized by reduced defecation and / or difficulty in defecation.

Epidemiological survey data show that the prevalence rate of constipation in China is 3% Mel 17.6%, and the prevalence rate of adult chronic constipation is 4% Mel 6%, which increases with age, and the incidence rate over 60 years old is 22%. The highest ratio of male to female was 1RU 4.5, and it increased year by year.

In this study, 185strains of Bifidobacterium longum (B.longum) were isolated from 354 subjects aged 0-108in 17 provinces and cities of China. The strains were divided into 5 different branches by phylogenetic analysis, and their functions were tested respectively.

Oral administration of B.lon_4, B.lon_70 and B.lon_8 increased the defecation frequency, gastrointestinal transport rate and fecal water content of mice, and shortened the whole intestinal transport time, indicating that Bifidobacterium longum has strain specificity in the treatment of constipation.

Further studies showed that except Bifidobacterium longum, for other intestinal microorganisms (such as Bacteroides, etc.), the existence of abfA gene cluster was also related to its effect on relieving constipation. It was also proved that the abundance of abfA gene cluster in intestinal flora of patients with functional constipation was significantly lower than that of healthy people. Transplanting fecal bacteria with high abfA gene cluster abundance could improve the constipation symptoms of sterile mice.
