CTOnews.com December 13, Meta announced today that it will begin pushing the multimodal AI capabilities of its Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses to some users. This feature allows AI assistants to understand what the wearer sees and hears through the glasses 'cameras and microphones, and provide relevant information and assistance.

Meta CEO mark zuckerberg showed off the feature on Instagram, asking glasses to recommend pants that match a shirt he's holding. Glasses not only accurately describes the shirt, but also offers several suggestions for matching. In addition, Zuckerberg also demonstrated the ability of the glasses AI assistant to translate text and generate image descriptions.

CTOnews.com notes that Zuckerberg revealed this feature in an interview with The Verge in September, saying people can "ask Meta AI assistant all kinds of questions all day long," suggesting that it can answer wearer questions about what they see or where they are.

Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth also showed off the AI assistant in a video that, for example, accurately identifies and describes California-shaped sculptures on walls. He also explained other features, including having assistants help add descriptions to photos taken, or translate and summarize them, which are also common in other products from companies such as Microsoft and Google.

Bosworth said the test would be conducted in the United States and limited to "a small percentage of opt-in users."
