Shulou(Shulou.com)12/24 Report--

Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, December 12 (Xinhua) on Tuesday, Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and SK Group Chairman Cui Tae-won visited the Dutch headquarters of ASML and discussed the semiconductor chip alliance with ASML and South Korean President Yoon Sik-Yue.

This evening, ASML announced that it has signed a memorandum with Samsung Electronics to jointly invest 1 trillion won (CTOnews.com Note: about 5.45 billion RMB) to set up a research center in South Korea, and will use the next generation extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machine to study ultra-fine semiconductor manufacturing processes.

At the same time, ASML announced the signing of an ESG Memorandum of understanding with SK Hynix to cooperate on environmental, social and corporate governance projects.

It is worth mentioning that early last month, it was reported that Samsung had purchased 50 sets of equipment from ASML within five years, each costing about 200 billion won, with a total value of 10 trillion won (currently about 54.5 billion yuan).

Samsung Electronics launched the world's first full-gate (GAA) 3nm foundry technology in June last year, so the company has been working to ensure the procurement of more EUV lithography equipment, with the goal of entering the second generation process of the 3nm generation in the first half of next year, 2nm process in 2025 and 1.4nm process in 2027.

That is why Chairman Lee Jae-yong visited ASML headquarters in June last year to discuss EUV procurement with Peter Bennink, chief executive, and held further talks with Bennink during a visit to South Korea in November. Given that EUV's delivery cycle (from order to receipt) takes at least a year, these meetings do seem to have yielded tangible results.
