CTOnews.com, December 11, 2008-Google released the first stable version of Chrome browser to the public 15 years ago today, as well as Chromium, an open source browser "written for the development of Chrome browsers".

The icon for ▲ Chrome Google quietly started developing Chrome in September 2004, when it emerged that it was trying to hire former Microsoft developers to launch a rival to Internet Explorer and Firefox Firefox.

Eric Schmidt, the then CEO of Google, was not optimistic about the Chrome browser at first, saying that Google "didn't want to lose the browser war", but Eric Schmidt "changed his mind" after seeing the prototype of Chrome.

Chrome usage has been on the rise since Google finally launched the first test version of Chrome in September 2008 and the first stable version of the browser in December.

▲ Chrome version 1.0, Picture Source Internet Archive Network Archives July 11, 2011, Chrome's market share in the UK reached 22.12%, while Firefox accounted for only 21.65%, surpassing Firefox browsers for the first time; on May 21, 2012, Chrome's global share reached 33%, surpassing Microsoft Internet Explorer in the first place.

CTOnews.com noted that as of November 2023, the usage rate of Chrome in global browsers was 62.85%, while that of Apple's Safari browser was 20.04%, according to StatCounter statistics. Microsoft Edge, which is based on the Chromium kernel, and browsers such as FireFox and Opera currently have less than 6% usage.
