Shulou(Shulou.com)12/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, December 11 (Xinhua)-- although we have been keeping an eye on electric car sales and the launch of new models, there is little mention that electric cars are helping us reduce oil consumption and help reduce global carbon emissions.
Global demand for oil from road transport is expected to reach about 42.3 million barrels a day in 2023, a slight increase from last year, according to a Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) report. Surprisingly, electric cars are not the biggest contributor to reducing oil use. Here are more details:
Electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles are expected to reduce oil consumption by nearly 1.8 million barrels per day in 2023, accounting for about 4.1 per cent of the demand of the road transport sector. This is an increase from the decrease of 1.5 million barrels per day in 2022.
Reduced oil consumption has almost doubled from 2015 to 2023, from about 720000 b / d in 2015 to nearly 1.8 million b / d in 2023, and this trend is expected to accelerate further.
Two-wheeled and three-wheeled electric vehicles accounted for about 60% of the reduction in oil consumption in 2023, mainly due to their rapid popularity and huge holdings in China, Southeast Asia and India.
In 2022, electric vehicles overtook buses in reducing oil consumption to become the second largest source. In 2023, electric vehicles are expected to account for 23% of the total reduction in oil demand, while buses and commercial vehicles account for 13% and 3%, respectively.
According to BNEF's basic economic transformation scenario, electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles will reduce oil consumption by 12.4 million barrels a day by 2035. Under BNEF's net zero-emission scenario, the world will achieve a zero-emission fleet by 2050, reducing oil consumption by 4 million barrels a day.
CTOnews.com notes that it can be seen from the report that daily oil consumption due to electric two-wheelers and tricycles is almost twice as much as that of electric vehicles. But it is clear that the market has not been given the attention it deserves.
Of course, less oil consumption means less carbon dioxide emissions. BNEF estimates that electric vehicles currently reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 112 million tons a year. This is a reduction in net emissions, taking into account emissions from additional power generation.
Unfortunately, we have only taken the first step in eliminating global warming emissions from road transport, and there is still a long way to go. Emissions reduction is expected to account for only about 2% of total road transport emissions in 2023.
