Why do sometimes color gaps appear in photos? How to avoid these faults?

When zooming in to view photos, or when editing them later, you sometimes find color breaks in photos that look very unnatural and directly affect the quality of photos.

Like this effect:

These color breaks, like a strip of color stacked together, greatly affect the appearance.

Color fault performance in the histogram, that is, color levels intermittent, very incoherent.

The appearance of fault is essentially due to the insufficient color depth of photos, which is mostly in digital photos, especially in JPEG format photos with small files, while the probability of color fault in film and RAW format photos is small.

In addition, color faults occur in pure color environments with small contrast, such as the sky, indoor environment, etc., and in bright backgrounds, this fault effect is sometimes more obvious.

Many times, color faults are found in the later process, the original photo looks good, slightly pull the curve, adjust the contrast, clarity, exposure value, etc., the fault will be very obvious, and the fault is difficult to repair.

So, how should we avoid color faults in daily shooting?

1. JPEG format photos are more likely to have color faults, and in later editing, JPEG format photos have less tolerance and are easy to show faults due to changes in parameters.

Therefore, if you are looking for higher photo quality, or have higher post-production requirements, we can choose RAW format when shooting, and greater post-production tolerance can reduce the occurrence of fault conditions.

2. In addition to using RAW format, we can also use bracketing exposure when shooting, take a few more photos when shooting, and compare the histograms of photos in time to avoid mistakes.

3. Later moderate and large-scale post-editing is also easy to form color faults, such as greatly changing exposure, improving contrast, etc. Excessive post-adjustment is essentially a reduction in photo quality, which is easy to expose some details of photos.

Therefore, we try to pursue perfection in the early shooting and avoid over-using the late to make up for the lack of photos.
