CTOnews.com, December 10, December 8, Apple's patent for merging 3D space during a communication session was announced.

The summary shows that various specific implementations disclosed herein include devices, systems, and methods for providing a communication session in which participants view an extended reality (XR) environment that represents a merging of a portion of the physical space of the first user and a portion of the physical space of the second user. Align the space based on the selected vertical surface (for example, walls) within each physical environment. For example, each user can manually select the corresponding walls of his or her own physical room, and can present to each user a view in which two of the rooms appear to be spliced together along the selected wall. In some embodiments, the room is aligned and merged to give the appearance of the wall being dismantled / erased and transformed into a portal into another user's room.

According to the patent description, the patent aims to achieve a "portal" effect in an extended reality (XR) environment where two users can see each other's physical space in real time and communicate face-to-face in a virtual space as if they were in the same room.

Not surprisingly, Apple's patent should be closely related to its upcoming augmented reality head display Vision Pro, which can capture the physical space of two users through its camera, then use its computing power to align and merge the two physical spaces, and finally present the merged 3D space to the two users, which will bring new application scenarios to remote collaboration, education, entertainment and other fields.
