CTOnews.com, December 9, the first candidate release of Wine 9.0 was released today, which also means that the biweekly development version of Wine 8.xx has come to an end.

The release of the first candidate version of Wine 9.0 means that the relevant code has entered a "feature freeze" phase. In the next month or two, the development team will focus on fixing bugs, and a stable version of Wine 9.0 is expected to be released in January and February next year.

The most noteworthy improvement in the first candidate version of Wine 9.0 is the improved support for Wine Wayland, the ability to use Vulkan, and initial support for mouse and keyboard layouts.

Wine 9.0-rc1 also introduced VKD3D version 1.10 to provide the latest Direct3D 12 on top of the Vulkan API implementation. However, Linux gamers are better off using the downstream VKD3D-Proton of Valve.

Wine 9.0-rc1 has also added support for DH encryption keys and the latest version of GNuTLS. In addition, there are 42 known bug fixes in Wine 9.0-rc1 that fix different Windows games and applications.
