The recent introduction of a number of high-level talents by BYD Planning Institute may mean that BYD has paid more attention to self-developed high-level intelligent driving algorithms.

According to reports, BYD is used to "internal training" of managers, but then introduced a number of managers from the outside in order to do a good job of smart driving. Since last year, a number of smart drivers at the director level and above have joined the BYD Planning Institute:

Around June 2022, Zhang Licun, former Volvo autopilot director, joined the Intelligent Network Union Center of the Planning Institute, responsible for the innovative business of intelligent driving.

Around June 2023, Zhou Yan, director of Zhe Ku, the former OPPO chip subsidiary, joined the embedded product center of the sixth division. Zhou Yan was mainly involved in the IP design of SoC chips (System on a Chip, system-on-chip) when he was in Zhe library.

In August 2023, Liao Jie, former director of Horizon Intelligent driving Research and Development, joined BYD as the head of the Shanghai intelligent driving team of the Planning Institute.

Around September 2023, Xu Lingyun, the former Gaohe intelligent driving director, joined the Electronic Integration Department of the Planning Institute.

According to people close to BYD, BYD's smart driving business is mainly handed over to the Planning Institute (mainly responsible for high-level intelligent driving programs, with a team size of nearly 2000 people) and the Fifth Division (mainly responsible for low-level smart driving programs).

BYD's current cooperation with smart driving suppliers include Nvidia, Horizon, Black Sesame, Texas Instruments and so on. In terms of software, BYD cooperates with Momenta, DJI, Dongsoft Ruichi, Fretak and so on. At present, the smart driving products developed by BYD involve chips, domain controllers, underlying software and algorithms, and so on.

Another person familiar with the matter said that at least five of the models developed by BYD plan to use the self-developed parking algorithm, of which self-developed parking has become the first supplier in a new model, which is scheduled to go on sale next year.

At present, at least four BYD models are planned to use "partial" self-development parking, including equation Leopard 5 and three models owned by Dynasty and Ocean, most of which will be available next year. Currently, Leopard 5 is verifying BYD's self-research parking algorithm.
