Shulou(Shulou.com)12/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, December 8 / PRNewswire-FirstCall-Asianet /-- Google introduced the Android Virtualization Framework (Android Virtualization Framework,AVF) for Pixel devices for the first time in Android 13. Google is pushing this framework to more Android 14 devices and releasing an AVF toolkit to help developers quickly debug and learn the framework.
▲ source Google official press release CTOnews.com note: AVF is a technology that can run virtual machines on Android devices, the main function of this technology is to isolate the workload from the operating system, somewhat similar to the way Android uses Linux processes, with a certain degree of security.
It is reported that AVF provides two isolation levels: one-way isolation and two-way isolation, in which "one-way isolation" virtual machines are usually used in sandboxie environment, allowing multiple systems to run on a single device, and all other virtual systems are controlled and monitored by the original Android system.
Bi-directional isolation means that Android (host) and virtual machines (Isolated VM / clients) are completely isolated from each other. Isolated virtual machines can be used to store and process sensitive information. Because virtual machines are isolated from each other, hosts and virtual machines need to go through explicitly agreed communication channels to access each other.
Google claims that, in some cases, AVF has become an alternative to Android Trustzone. (note: TrustZone is an Arm-based security technology that claims to provide "secure operating environment and hardware-level protection").
Google also said that with the two-way isolation capability of AVF, developers can run use cases that "need to be isolated, but do not need to raise specific permissions" in Android systems, that is, the isolated virtual machines provided by AVF can securely isolate applications without adding specific permissions. Google mentioned that such isolation mechanisms are particularly suitable for protecting sensitive data or performing important operations.
▲ source Google official press release in addition, CTOnews.com also noted that AVF is also "portable" and "extensible". Google claims that related virtual machines and applications can run on all devices that support AVF; AVF is also designed with the needs of developers in mind, and developers are free to customize virtual machines to meet the needs of specific use cases. Developers can deploy any virtual machine payload as long as some of the startup and communication protocols specified by AVF are met.
Google plans to expand the scope of AVF availability in Android 14 to make AVF available on more devices, while opening Android system API for AVF to allow specific applications to use virtual machines, while developers can track maintenance processes through the DevEx virtual machine management toolkit.
