CTOnews.com, December 8 (Xinhua)-- according to a report by the Wall Street Journal at noon Beijing time today, Apple and its suppliers in India have set a new goal: to produce more than 5000 iPhone phones a year in India in the next two to three years, with tens of millions more planned.

If this is achieved, India will account for 1/4 of global iPhone production and further expand its share by the end of the decade. At the same time, however, China will remain the world's largest producer of iPhone.

The report also said that Foxconn is currently building a plant in southern India is expected to start operation in April next year, its goal is to produce 2000 million iPhone and other equipment each year for the next two to three years. In addition, Foxconn plans to build a second plant of similar size in the area.

Indian company Tata Group also plans to build a "large-scale" factory to produce Apple devices, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. It is said that the plant, which is expected to have 50000 workers and 20 assembly lines, will be operational in the next 12 to 18 months.

According to CTOnews.com, the Financial Times quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that Apple had informed suppliers that it preferred to purchase batteries for iPhone 16 phones from Indian factories, a move in line with Apple's diversified supply chain strategy.

It is reported that Apple encourages battery manufacturers, including China's Desai, to set up new factories in India. In addition, Indian Federal Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar Chandrashekhar said on platform X on December 4 that Japanese electronic parts manufacturer TDK will be building a 180-acre facility in Manesar, Haryana, India, to produce lithium-ion battery units for Indian-made iPhone.
