CTOnews.com, December 8 (Xinhua)-- Apple issued a press release today, citing a study by Dr. Stuart Madnick, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, saying that there were more than 26 billion records in the past two years and that users had been compromised by the disclosure of personal information.

The report describes historical threats to user data. The number of data leaks tripled between 2013 and 2022, compromising as many as 2.6 billion personal records in the past two years alone and worsening in 2023.

In the United States alone, data leaks in the first nine months of 2023 were nearly 20% higher than in the previous year. The goal of cyber criminals is very clear.

A 2023 survey found that more than 80% of the leaks involved data stored in the cloud. Attacks on cloud infrastructure nearly doubled from 2021 to 2022.

Part of the reason is that blackmail software gangs are increasingly targeting consumer data, and some illegal activities attack consumers by infringing on suppliers or their products.

The threat of ransomware intensified in 2023, with nearly 70% more attacks reported in September 2023 than in the first three quarters of 2022.

In fact, experts found that there were more ransomware attacks in September 2023 than in the whole of 2022. This means that there are alarming trends in the United States and around the world.

In the UK, Australia and Canada, the number of leaked accounts in the first half of 2023 was nearly double that of the same period in 2022.

Based on the research report, Apple stressed the importance of end-to-end encryption, saying that iCloud defaults to end-to-end encryption to protect 14 types of sensitive data, including iCloud keychain passwords and health data.

When users enable iCloud enhanced data protection, the number of data types protected with end-to-end encryption increases to 23, including iCloud backups, memos, and photos.
