Recently, the ASC24 world college student supercalculus competition opened to sign up. Colleges and universities around the world can submit applications through the official website of the competition to participate in the world's largest and most competitive supercomputing competition. The deadline for submission is December 15, 2023.

Since its inception in 2012, ASC has witnessed tens of thousands of college students struggle and express their passion in the field in the past 11 years. After the game, many members of the competition ignited their love because ASC found the direction of development. Love is the source of motivation and the most lasting strength in a person's heart. ASC competition helps young people find it, inspire it, and illuminate their way of life.

ASC directs the direction of study

Previous ASC competitions cover astronomical exploration, life science, artificial intelligence, meteorology, materials, chemistry and other frontier science fields. In the months-long process of preparing for the competition, students need to learn in-depth knowledge of relevant fields and practice the application of optimization programs on the field, which will help them to broaden their horizons, increase knowledge and explore interest. It is through ASC that many students find their favorite research direction.

In 2015, ASC was held at Taiyuan University of Technology, and Gao Jianhua, a sophomore at home, signed up as a volunteer. This is her first close contact with the international supercomputing competition. She was impressed by the charming speech and behavior of teachers and students of top universities at home and abroad and their ability to deal with technical problems. It also made her have a deeper understanding of supercomputing and inspired her to participate in the competition. After a year of training at the school's supercomputing base, she participated in ASC again as a contestant in 2016. Intense and substantial preparation not only helped Gao Jianhua quickly accumulate knowledge and greatly improved her actual combat ability, but at the same time, her interest in supercomputing is also growing day by day.

Based on ASC's experience, Gao Jianhua focuses on laboratories related to embedded architecture. After the competition, he studied for his PhD degree, focusing on parallel and high-performance computing, sparse matrix computing optimization and performance acceleration of GPU applications. In the future, she will continue to develop in the field of parallel and high-performance computing.

Yang Xuanda of Zhejiang University also agrees that ASC affects the direction of further study. He said: "ASC has changed the way I think about problems, but also let me firmly find the direction of research-computer graphics + programming languages." Yang Xuanda is currently studying for his doctorate at the University of California, San Diego.

Before joining the ASC, Yang Xuanda was vague about his future plans, and it was almost a natural choice to follow the trend with his classmates. He seldom thinks about what he likes, what he is good at, and what he is suitable for. At ASC, he met his classmates from Tsinghua University, Shanghai University of Science and Technology, and other universities, and his "research ideas" deeply shocked him. Some of them engaged in distributed systems, others engaged in secure computing, and never blindly followed the trend.

He began to rethink his research direction-an area that should combine the potential of technology, the advantages of school research and personal interests-computer graphics + programming languages. Computer graphics has a very high demand for computing performance, and Yang Xuanda is to do computer system research, to build the underlying system and framework for the algorithm. Had it not been for the high-performance computing and parallel computing skills honed in ASC, he would have missed the star of his own technology.

ASC lays the foundation for career development

ASC contest not only tests college students' knowledge and skills in supercalculation, but also examines the abilities of teamwork, communication, contingency, speech and so on, which are also essential in the workplace. In the view of many students participating in the competition, the ASC competition has laid a good foundation for job hunting, helping them determine their career direction and make a breakthrough in the workplace.

Cui Jinyu of Shanxi University participated in the ASC for two consecutive years in 2018 and 2019, and led the Shanxi university team to the ASC finals for the first time as captain of the ASC19. The title of ASC pointed out the direction for Cui Jinyu to enter related industries ahead of time. The autumn move of his junior year, he stood out from many competitors. after layers of selection, he won the offer of Tencent and became a front-end engineer of Wechat.

In Cui Jinyu's view, ASC provides an experience similar to closed development and extreme sprint, which can comprehensively enhance the hard skills and soft power of the contestants. After entering the workplace, he found that no matter the optimization ideas of external development or the basic logic of departmental cooperation, a lot of work is in line with ASC. Shortly after joining the job, Cui Jinyu won Tencent's Open Source Synergy Award.

For Bai Chenhan of Yanshan University, ASC and supercomputing ran through his four years of college life. In four years, from rookie, player to captain, the experience of ASC competition has made him make great progress. He even took the quantum simulation contest QuEST of ASC20-21 as his graduation project and was selected as the school-level excellent design (the top 2%).

Bai Chenhan said: "in the process of preparing for the race, I improved my skills in all aspects, gained a better understanding of parallelism, optimization and scheduling algorithms, and comprehensively practiced many aspects of knowledge, including parallel computing, operating systems, composition principles, data structures and algorithms. ASC experience made me hit it off with the interviewer in my 2019 internship and job interview and sign up on the spot."
