Canalys believes that solution providers based on ARM architecture have long been an integral part of the smartphone, automotive and tablet market, while leading manufacturers such as Qualcomm, MediaTek, Huawei and Apple have chosen to embed NPU in their smartphone chips, gaining a head start in PC:

Currently, Qualcomm's Hexagon processor unit in the Snapdragon X Elite has reached an amazing 45 TOPS. Intel, on the other hand, seems to be struggling to catch up and is not expected to reach comparable levels of performance until the launch of the Lunar Lake platform in 2025.

As OEM is keen to launch the AI roadmap on its devices, PC vendors based on ARM processors have the opportunity to carve up the share of this emerging market segment. However, Intel still believes that its current product design is sufficient to meet the needs of users for AI tasks in most use cases.

In addition, Apple's M3 chip reached 18 TOPS, only slightly higher than M2's 15.8 TOPS. Although lower than Qualcomm and AMD, Apple has a high degree of control over its hardware and software ecosystem, which will help Mac computers provide a comparable AI experience with lower hardware specifications.

CTOnews.com learned that Canalys expects 60 per cent of the PC on the market to have AI by 2027, and Canalys stressed that there are signs that Microsoft is working with computer manufacturers to design products with a performance of more than 40 TOPS to meet the requirements of the next generation of Windows Copilot systems. This new product has the potential to set a new standard for "AI PC" in the Windows ecosystem.
