CTOnews.com, December 7 (Xinhua)-- Toyota Motor recently released a new patent application, showing a device used to simulate "manual gears" for electric vehicles, which claims that the number of gears is "unlimited" from a technical point of view, that is, users are free to set the number of gears they want, according to a report by foreign media motor1 on Wednesday.

The pictures provided by the patent show that the device can provide up to 14 stops. According to reports, drivers can accurately choose the transmission ratio they want.

According to the description in the patent document, the principle of the device is to use the controller of the motor to simulate different virtual gear ratios, giving the driver a shift feeling similar to that of a manual transmission.

When the driver chooses the highest gear or the lowest gear, the system will automatically switch to the corresponding virtual gear set. For example, if the user chooses "6 gear mode" and is currently in 6 gear, the system will change the currently available transmission ratio, prompting the user to move up to a higher gear or down to a lower gear.

Toyota announced earlier this year that it would add a simulated manual gearbox to electric vehicles starting in 2026, combining the traditional manual driving experience with electric vehicles, according to CTOnews.com.

At the Tokyo Motor Show earlier this year, Toyota showed off two concept cars based on the legendary AE86: the power part was upgraded to pure electricity and hydrogen while retaining the original appearance of the classic car.

Among them, the pure electric AE86 uses the same drive motor as Toyota's flat-road hybrid, and is equipped with the same battery pack of the new Prius. In addition, some parts of the car are shared with Lexus. It is worth mentioning that the car is also equipped with a manual transmission.
