Among them, AI is a hot technology that has attracted much attention in recent years, and how to use AI to improve 5G capability has also become a hot topic among the participants.

In a speech at the Tech Talk 2023 Innovation Technology Forum held on the first day of the 2023 World 5G Congress, Li Yan, vice president of technical standards of Qualcomm, said that in traditional system design, the determined model can cover most of the scenarios, because most of the time the application field, application environment and application methods are similar. If we encounter some special scenarios, we can deal with it through targeted engineering methods, so as to help the whole system to achieve high reliability. Nowadays, with the expansion of mobile communications to various industries, we find that every industry will often encounter a variety of special scenarios, such as factories, stadiums, subway stations and so on, and the corresponding technical challenges will be more and more. Therefore, how to make the future communication system design more suitable for a variety of application scenarios has become a topic that we need to study.

Li Yan said that AI opens up a new possibility for us, because the design idea of AI is based on data, not model-based assumptions, which can provide better accuracy and enhance adaptability. Therefore, when we combine AI and wireless communication technology, we can trigger the "technological revolution" of mobile communication. Wireless communication and AI have complementary advantages and can greatly improve the quality of service of mobile communication system.

As a new generation of mobile communication technology, 5G is constantly evolving. At present, the completed 5G standard versions Rel-15, Rel-16 and Rel-17 belong to the first stage of 5G development. Starting from Rel-18, 5G will enter a new stage of development called "5G Advanced". In the stage of 5G Advanced, intelligence is also one of the key technology directions of 5G network and terminal. For example, in the era of 5G Advanced, wireless networks clearly built the core competence of "endogenous intelligence" for the first time, which is a key step towards the long-term goal of native AI.

In February this year, Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon X75, the world's first 5G Advanced-ready modem and RF system. The Snapdragon X75 features a second-generation Qualcomm 5G AI processor that supports a number of advanced AI-based features, including the world's first sensor-assisted millimeter wave beam management and second-generation AI enhanced GNSS positioning, resulting in excellent 5G performance. In October, Qualcomm and Nokia Bell announced that they had jointly achieved peak downlink rates of more than 10 gigabits per second (10Gbps) by using smartphone test terminals equipped with Snapdragon X75, as well as Nokia Bell AirScale commercial 5G millimeter wave base stations and core network system equipment, and "10 Gigabit ubiquitous experience" is also one of the visions of 5G Bell. At the Wuzhen Summit of the World Internet Congress held last month, Qualcomm also won the "World Internet Congress leading Science and Technology Award" for Snapdragon X75.

Recently, Xiaomi, Yijia, Meizu and other major manufacturers have released 5G flagship phones with the new generation of Snapdragon 8, which supports running the AI model on the phone, bringing users a variety of innovative generative AI application experiences. Li Yan believes that generative AI also plays an important role in the design of mobile communication systems, and Qualcomm has carried out comprehensive basic research in related fields, including 3D modeling, material learning, and how to use neural networks to render the channel. It is hoped that on this basis, the related technologies of AI will be brought into the future 6G system design. 'We have experienced the performance changes that AI brings to terminals and networks, and 5G Advanced has officially ushered in the era of wireless AI,'he said.
