Good morning, leaders, distinguished guests, colleagues from industry and academia! I'm Qualcomm Lei Chen, and I'm very happy to be here with you at the World 5G Conference.

Since 5G was commercialized in 2019, 5G has reached midfield, and 5G Advanced has started a new wave of innovation. It is my pleasure to share with you today how Qualcomm can push the industry and society into a sustainable future through 5G technology innovation, and jointly discuss how to gather ecological forces to promote the development of green and low-carbon economy. i believe this forum will bring about a meaningful discussion.

According to projections, the global population is expected to grow from 7 billion to 10 billion by 2050, and the world economy is expected to grow nearly threefold, increasing demand for natural resources and increasing energy use by 80%. Building a more sustainable and greener future is therefore a critical issue for the world. A number of cutting-edge technology breakthroughs and convergence innovations will play an important role, including extremely fast 5G connectivity, high-performance low-power computing, terminal-side AI and cloud services.

Technological innovation is a cornerstone for achieving sustainable development goals. As the world's leading wireless technology innovator, Qualcomm has created a "unified technology roadmap" that efficiently and massively extends advanced technologies such as AI, imaging, processing, connectivity and multimedia to almost all types of terminals, from smartphones to smart connected cars, from consumer Internet of Things, industrial Internet of Things to edge connected terminals, etc.

For sustainable development, we propose a "meaningful innovation" architecture. It is more than just a philosophy; it guides all aspects of Qualcomm's business, including corporate social responsibility, product design and manufacturing, corporate culture and ecosystem collaboration. The new architecture consists of three strategic focus areas: first, enabling digital transformation. Technology can reshape industries, businesses, communities and individual lives. Qualcomm insists on focusing on the future, continuously promoting technological breakthroughs, meeting difficult challenges and creating positive impacts. Second, operate responsibly. We invest in employee development and are committed to responsible business practices, including a culture of diversity, equality and inclusion. Third, sustainable operation. Our environmental initiatives include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing power consumption, managing water use and minimizing waste generation.

I am also proud to share with you that Qualcomm's long-term investment in ESG has yielded fruitful results: Qualcomm has reduced greenhouse gas emissions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by approximately 28% since 2014; and has been certified as Platinum Climate Register by the Climate Registry of international organizations for five consecutive years. More than 25 million people worldwide benefit from Qualcomm's Wireless Cares program, enabling advanced wireless technology to reach the people and communities most in need. Qualcomm's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) strategic programs engage 1.5 million students and faculty worldwide, laying a solid foundation to inspire the next generation of inventors.

As a result, we have received a lot of heavy honors and recognition: Qualcomm has been on Fortune's "Change the World" list three times since 2019. In China, we were awarded the "Outstanding Contribution Award for Poverty Alleviation" set up by China Rural Development Foundation, and won awards set up by Xinhua and other authoritative media in the field of ESG.

To better address climate-related risks and opportunities, Qualcomm has developed its Corporate Responsibility Goals for 2025 and Vision for Corporate Responsibility 2030. We are committed to improving the sustainability of the solutions we design, reducing the power consumption of our flagship Snapdragon mobile platform by at least 10% each year. Especially from the first generation Snapdragon 8 in 2021 to the second generation Snapdragon 8 in 2022, we have also increased the power of 5G modems by 20%. By 2030, achieve a 50 per cent reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions and a 25 per cent reduction in Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions; by 2040, achieve net global zero emissions of Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 greenhouse gases. These quantifiable targets reflect our strong commitment and relentless efforts to promote environmental sustainability.

As practitioners, we are excited to drive and witness continued innovation and breakthroughs in wireless communications technologies that help bridge the digital divide while increasing efficiency and reducing computing and consumer electronics power consumption. Qualcomm's foundational technologies and solutions bring high-performance, low-power computing and connectivity experiences to a wide range of industries and users. Over the past 30 years, Qualcomm has been working closely with China's wireless communication ecosystem to build a sustainable future for economic, social and environmental development, and to fulfill Qualcomm's commitment to the beautiful vision of "intelligent interconnection of people and everything."

At present, global sustainable development focuses on three key pillars: social, economic and environmental: first, sustainable economic development advocates new values, business models and markets to improve productivity and efficiency, thus promoting long-term economic growth. The second is sustainable social development, focusing on the improvement of people's quality of life, digital equality and inclusiveness, so that more groups can benefit from social progress. Third, environmental sustainable development, through the reduction of carbon emissions, to achieve sustainable use of energy, water, land and other natural resources, to protect green mountains.

In order to better turn to the path of sustainable development and better solve the development problems in the three dimensions of society, economy and environment, the United Nations has proposed a series of sustainable development goals. Among these goals, advanced technology plays a crucial role in improving efficiency through digital transformation: intelligent connected cars will help reduce traffic congestion and pollution; smart factories will be flexible in deploying production lines to improve productivity and energy efficiency; precision agriculture will help farmers optimize water and fertilizer use, reduce resource waste and reduce environmental impact.

The theme of this conference is how to use 5G technology to promote sustainable development. In fact, 5G, with its advantages of fiber-like speed, ultra-low latency, ultra-large capacity and high reliability, has become a key driver for the sustained growth of the enabling digital economy. According to projections, 5G will create $13.1 trillion in global economic output by 2035. This growth shows that 5G is critical for the digital future and that the digital transformation of the industry is accelerating.

5G is now in its fifth year of commercialization. Globally, 265 operators have deployed 5G commercial networks, and more than 275 operators are investing in 5G technology; the number of 5G connections has exceeded 1 billion; more than 2100 5G terminals have been released or are being designed; and 5G smartphone shipments are expected to exceed 6 billion by 2026.

Just now, some guests also shared China's achievements in 5G construction. At present, China has built the world's largest and technologically advanced 5G network. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, by the end of October, the total number of 5G base stations in China reached 3.215 million, accounting for 28.1% of the total number of mobile base stations; 754 million 5G mobile phone users, accounting for 43.7% of mobile phone users; and more than 94,000 5G application cases, which have been integrated into 67 major categories of national economy. The large-scale development of 5G industry application, accompanied by a new wave of 5G technology innovation, will strongly promote the sustainable and high-quality development of economic society.

The analysis shows that globally, companies in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry directly generate only 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions each year, mainly from the energy required to run data centers and networks. Digital technologies developed by the ICT industry have significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions from industries such as communications, tourism and industrial production by about 15%. With the continuous innovation of 5G, IoT and AI technologies, ICT companies are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by another 10 billion tons by 2030. We hope ICT technologies and solutions can be better used by society and play a greater role in green and sustainable development.

5G brings many enabling technologies that help us build a more sustainable world. Fixed wireless access, powered by 5G millimeter waves, extends broadband access to less developed communities, provides networks and services to more users, and narrows the gap created by economic and social inequality. 5G non-terrestrial networks complement terrestrial cellular networks by providing wireless connectivity to remote areas lacking traditional network infrastructure, bringing new opportunities for health care, education and economic development to residents there. 5G Internet of Things provides ubiquitous connectivity for various terminals and services in smart cities, smart homes, industrial automation, precision agriculture and other industries, thus improving efficiency and saving energy.

Friends who understand and are familiar with the communications industry know that the transition in wireless communications technology is a decade, that is, a decade generation. Now, we have entered the second phase of the "Golden Decade" of the 5G era-5G Advanced, and ushered in a new round of wireless technology innovation. 5G Advanced will continue to improve end-to-end system performance, bring new efficiencies, extend 5G to more endpoints and use cases, and help us meet economic, social and sustainability challenges over the next decade. In addition, 5G Advanced can lay the technical foundation for the next generation of mobile platforms that will appear in 2030 and beyond.

From the first quarter of 2022 to the first quarter of 2023, mobile network data grew at a high rate of 36%. The massive connection of multiple types of terminals, coupled with the increased use of data in different industries in different scenarios, means that energy consumption is also increasing significantly. Worldwide operator data shows that approximately 23% of operating expenses are energy consumption required to support network operations, with wireless access networks accounting for 73% of energy consumption. With the deep deployment of 5G and the rapid growth in the number of devices and data usage, technological innovation in improving the energy efficiency of wireless access networks is critical to saving operating expenses and contributing to environmental sustainability.

5G Advanced focuses on dedicated energy-saving features for terminals and networks, and continues to explore new opportunities for end-to-end energy-saving technologies to help build greener, energy-efficient networks. Building on previous standard versions, 5G Advanced focuses on new ways to improve the energy efficiency of 5G networks. One of the methods to reduce network power consumption is to dynamically adjust network operation according to terminal feedback. For example, reduce transmission power based on overall network traffic load, or use more efficient antennas, etc. Release 18, the first version of 5G Advanced, includes not only network energy conservation research projects, but also work projects that adopt specific energy conservation technologies. The second release, Release 19, will introduce "energy efficiency as a service," a new approach that helps users and vertical industries choose energy efficiency standards and other network performance parameters based on their own needs to control power consumption and optimize network resources.

Looking into the longer term, Qualcomm is leading the way in 6G infrastructure research and leveraging emerging trends such as cloud computing, spectrum sharing and machine learning. The 6G road is also a high-speed road for sustainable social, economic and environmental development.

Finally, let me conclude by sharing today. The continuous evolution of wireless technology is helping to build a more resilient, equitable and sustainable society, which excites our practitioners. The era of 5G Advanced is opening, and the system optimization it brings lays the foundation for a greener next-generation wireless design. In the near future, 6G will bring unprecedented levels of efficiency and performance, which is expected to generate a wide range of industry and social benefits and further promote the sustainable development of the digital economy.

Under the new wave of cutting-edge technology, Qualcomm will insist on R & D first, continue to invest, and constantly break through the boundaries of mobile technology. Based on close collaboration with ecological partners in various industries, we will continue to promote the scale of 5G applications, the digitalization, intelligence and green transformation of enabling industries, and jointly move towards a green future of intelligent interconnection between people and everything.
