According to the latest analysis of app store trends, Meta's social media app Threads has recently overtaken competitor X.

Although daily downloads of Threads have been declining since September, the situation has begun to reverse in the past week, according to Apptopia, an application intelligence company. Specifically, Threads's daily downloads fell from 1m in early September to 350,000 in early November, but Threads's daily downloads have grown to 620,000 since November 23.

Apptopia estimates that the recent surge in Threads downloads may be due to Meta starting to advertise for Threads.

Recently, the new downloads of Threads are ahead of X. Apptopia reported that X has added 2700 million new downloads since September, while Threads has added 4100. But since X's apps in emerging markets have not yet been renamed, the statistics also include new downloads from Twitter Lite.

The data show that the increase in Threads downloads is mainly due to areas outside the United States. The largest number of Threads downloads during this period is the Indian market, with 9.2 million downloads, accounting for 11.2% of the new downloads. The US market ranks second, with 6.1 million downloads, accounting for 7.4 per cent of new downloads. Apptopia explains that because India has always been the biggest source of growth for Instagram itself.

The market with the largest number of new downloads for X is not the United States, but Indonesia, followed by India. But Apptopia found that the combined number of new downloads of X in the US, Indonesia and India was less than that of Threads in one market in India.

Apptopia believes that the decrease in X downloads is due to the growth affected by the renaming. In fact, at the end of September, X added the word "ex-Twitter" to its Apple App Store description to help apps get better rankings when searching for the keyword "Twitter". According to Sensor Tower, an app store intelligence company, the number and ranking of weekly active users of the app declined after it was renamed X. Sensor Tower found that while X's ranking is falling, "Twitter Lite" apps are rising, probably because users still want to download what they call "Twitter" apps. Sensor Tower said this led to a surge in Twitter Lite downloads, which increased by about 350 per cent in the first week after Twitter was renamed X.

But compared with Threads, this does not help X to increase the total downloads.

Still, social media platform X is still bigger and more sticky than Threads. Statistics show that X has more than 500 million monthly active users, while Threads has less than 100 million monthly active users, according to the latest financial report released by Meta in October. For an app that has only been online for three months, this is already considerable. Quiver Quantity's independent tracking shows that as of November 10, the number of Threads users has grown to 141 million.

Today, with the loss of a large number of advertisers, the future of X is uncertain, with major brands including Apple, IBM, Disney, Paramount, Warner Brothers, Lions Gate, Sony and Wal-Mart withdrawing their advertising campaigns from the X platform. Earlier, at the DealBook summit on November 29, X owner Elon Musk (Elon Musk) said in an interview to brands leaving the X platform: "screw you."

Despite these problems, many major events will still be posted on X. This is because X is still the main platform for many media to release news, and Instagram director Adam Moseri (Adam Mosseri) said that Threads will not magnify the news and has no intention of becoming a competitor to X in real-time information. Last week, Moseri added that Threads search results will not be displayed in chronological order, as this will allow bad users to influence the results by adding relevant keywords and tags, creating "significant security vulnerabilities."
