CTOnews.com, December 5 (Xinhua)-- A team of Carnegie Mellon University and Hugging Face has found that the rise of generative AI has not only brought about major changes in various industries, but also has a significant impact on the earth's environment.

AI generates pictures

The researchers studied the carbon footprints of various AI models, including chatbots, paper editors, image classifiers and image generators, and measured the energy and carbon emissions consumed by these models after performing a given task 1000 times.

The study found that text-based models, such as chatbots and paper editors, are relatively energy efficient, with energy per thousand chats equivalent to 16% of the energy consumed by mainstream smartphones to charge; however, using image models such as image classifiers and image generators, the least efficient image generation model consumes 11.49 kWh per thousand times, equivalent to 950 recharges for mainstream phones.

The researchers also point out that depending on the size and quality of the images they generate, the performance of different image generation models varies greatly. They believe that more research is needed to understand and balance environmental costs with the benefits of artificial intelligence models.

The study highlights the importance of considering the impact of artificial intelligence on the environment, as the global artificial intelligence market is expected to be worth nearly $1.6 trillion by 2030.

The amount of data generated by the digital economy is also growing exponentially and will reach 163 gigabytes by 2025. These trends mean that the energy demand and carbon emissions of artificial intelligence will increase accordingly.

Artificial intelligence can also contribute to solving environmental problems by providing new insights and promoting effective environmental governance. For example, artificial intelligence can help monitor and predict climate change, optimize renewable energy, reduce waste and pollution, and promote sustainable consumption and production.
