CTOnews.com, December 4 (Xinhua)-- the US Federal Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the verdict of Intel's infringement of VLSI Technology patents made by a jury in 2021 and rejected the award of $2.18 billion in damages to Intel, which is also one of the largest cases in the history of US patent law.

According to the judge, the case will be returned to Texas for a new trial to determine how much Intel should pay for infringing a second VLSI patent.

Tu Yuan Pexels U.S. Federal Court of Texas ruled in March 2021 that Intel infringed the VLSI Technology patent and ordered Intel to pay $2.18 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 15.565 billion yuan).

VLSI previously claimed that Intel's Cascade Lake and Skylake processors infringed their patents covering data processing improvements, which VLSI bought from NXP Semiconductor.

In June, the US Patent Office (PTAB) invalidated one of the VLSI Technology patents, giving Intel a capital waiver of $2.18 billion.

According to the announcement, one of the two patents was originally granted to Freescale in 2012 and the other to SigmaTel in 2010.

Freescale later acquired SigmaTel and was acquired by NXP in 2015. According to Bloomberg data, the two patents were only transferred to VLSI Technology LLC in 2019.
