Shulou(Shulou.com)12/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, December 4 (Xinhua) according to a report released by analyst TechInsights a few days ago, total shipments of global game consoles (game console) rose 11% year-on-year to 9.1 million in 2023, the strongest third quarter since 2017.

This follows sales growth of 32 per cent and 19 per cent respectively in the first two quarters of this year. TechInsights expects the console market to be weak in the last quarter of 2023, but this leading consumer electronics category will perform strongly throughout the calendar year.

CTOnews.com learned from the report that Sony overtook Nintendo as the global leader in the game console market with 54 per cent market share and 42 per cent year-on-year growth. Sony's shipments in that quarter reached the highest level ever for Q3, and it was also the second-best quarter for Sony PlayStation 5 shipments since its launch in 2020.

Based on this performance, TechInsights expects Sony to meet its total shipping target of 2500 million units this fiscal year. To achieve this goal, Sony also plans to launch a higher storage capacity PS5 Slim in Q4 in 2023.

Nintendo (excluding Switch Lite) shipments fell 15% year-on-year in 2023, falling to second place with a 27% market share. The report said the decline would have been even greater without the spillover effects of the success of the flagship games "tears of the Kingdom of Zelda" and "Super Mario Brothers Movie" released last quarter. The success of the game and movie continued to drive sales in the third quarter, extending the life cycle of Nintendo consoles.

An updated version of Switch is expected to be released in early 2024, TechInsights said. Nintendo maintained its forecast of 15 million units (including Switch Lite) for the fiscal year ended March 24, as it plans to focus heavily on its game series (Super Mario Brothers: surprise, released in October, sold 4.3 million in two weeks) to drive hardware upgrades.

Microsoft's Xbox Series X / S shipments fell 6 per cent to about 1.8 million in 2023. Xbox Series S launched the 1TB version, while Xbox Series X continued to dominate with 72 per cent of the product share.
