CTOnews.com, December 3 (Xinhua)-- more than 50 years after the last Apollo mission, the United States will try to land on the moon again on January 25, 2024, according to a recent report by the physicists' organization network.

However, this is not a manned mission to the moon, but to send a lander called Peregrine to the moon. The lander, developed by the US company Astrobotic, will carry instruments from NASA to study the lunar environment and pave the way for NASA's follow-up "Artemis" manned mission to the moon.

John Thornton, chief executive of Astrobotic, says one of the big challenges the company will try is to launch and land on the lunar surface at a very low cost.

He also revealed that Artemis will take several days to reach lunar orbit and will not attempt to land until January 25 to ensure proper lighting conditions at the target location.

Earlier, the United launch Alliance (ULA) announced that the new Vulcan Centauri rocket carrying the probe would be launched for the first time in Florida on December 24.

Chris Calbert, director of NASA's "CLPS" lunar landing program, said he hopes to build a base on the lunar surface through "Altemis".

Comprehensive CTOnews.com previously reported that only four countries have successfully landed on the moon, namely, the United States, Russia (former Soviet Union), China and India. Among them, the Indian "lunar ship 3" successfully landed on the moon in late August this year, and the probe completed a soft landing near the South Pole at 69.37 degrees south and 32.35 degrees east longitude. This is also the first time that man has visited the South Pole of the moon at close range.
