Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens amocken and Mr. Aviation for your clue delivery! CTOnews.com, December 3 (Xinhua)-- Japan and the European Union jointly built a large-scale nuclear fusion experimental device in Nako City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, which began operation on December 1, taking another step towards the realization of an "artificial sun."
According to CTOnews.com, nuclear fusion is a process in which two light nuclei combine into a heavier nucleus and release huge energy. in theory, nuclear fusion can provide almost unlimited energy. Humans have been able to achieve uncontrolled nuclear fusion, that is, the explosion of hydrogen bombs. At present, scientists are working hard to study controllable nuclear fusion, which may become a source of energy in the future.
On the afternoon of the 1st, the Nake Institute of Japan's Quantum Science and Technology Research and Development Institute held a ceremony to commemorate the operation of the large-scale nuclear fusion experimental device JT-60SA. The six-story machine is located in a hangar in the city of Nake, north of Tokyo, and includes a circular "tokamak" container designed to hold rotating plasma heated to 200 million degrees Celsius. As the button in the central control room is pressed, ultra-high temperature plasma is produced in the device a few seconds later.
According to the data of the Research and Development Institute of Quantum Science and Technology, JT-60SA is currently the largest superconducting tokamak nuclear fusion reactor in the world, and the plasma necessary for nuclear fusion was produced for the first time during experimental operation on October 23.
The JT-60SA project is the leading project of the International Thermonuclear Experimental reactor Program (ITER, also known as the "artificial Sun" project). Its results will be reflected in ITER and will be used in the construction of future nuclear fusion prototype reactors.
Unlike nuclear fission, fusion does not cause a catastrophic nuclear accident like Fukushima in Japan in 2011, and produces far less radioactive waste than nuclear fission.
