CTOnews.com, Dec. 3 (Xinhua)-- scientists have developed a new type of "miniature human cellular robot", according to a new study published in the journal Advanced Science on November 30. The "human cell robot", made up of human cells, is expected to discover cancer, repair damaged tissue and even remove plaques in blood vessels in the future.

Tufts University in the United States worked with a research team from Harvard University to successfully develop a "miniature human cellular robot" with a diameter of 30 to 500 microns. These robots are made up entirely of human cells, grow from a single cell, have a natural lifespan, and usually degrade themselves after a few weeks. It is reported that he survived in the laboratory environment for 60 days.

According to CTOnews.com, the study was led by Michael Levin, a developmental biologist at Tufts University who created the first live robot four years ago. The robots, made up of the embryonic heart and skin cells of the African claw frog, can crawl and swim to remove microplastics or fight cancer cells. On this basis, Levin's graduate student Gizem Gumskaya used adult tracheal cells to create a new generation of robots. The cilia of tracheal cells can be used as tiny oars to help the robot move.

At present, the study is still in its early stages, but it has already shown potential in the medical field. The researchers found that the robots could promote the growth of damaged nerve cells, although it is not clear why. The study was funded in part by Astonishing Labs Biotechnology, which aims to use the technology to treat neurological diseases and neurospinal cord injuries.
