CTOnews.com, Nov. 30 (Xinhua)-- researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recently analyzed data from 577,000 multinational adult samples to assess the association between body mass index (BMI), type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer risk.

According to the findings, being overweight or obese increases the risk of non-communicable diseases, including type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related heart metabolic diseases (CMD), and can cause cancer.

Data suggest that high body mass index (BMI) can lead to at least 13 cancers, including breast, gastric and cardiac, ovarian, thyroid, kidney, gallbladder, uterine, pancreatic, colorectal and esophageal cancers.

In addition, the study data also showed that people with high BMI with cardiovascular (heart) disease had a 17% increased risk of developing cancer.

The study analyzed data from the UK Biological sample Bank (UKB) and the European prospective Survey of Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC).

UKB recruited about 500000 adults aged 40 to 69 from England, Wales and Scotland between 2006 and 2010, while EPIC recruited more than 520000 adults aged 35 to 69 from 10 European countries between 1992 and 2000.

Scientists have found that there is an expected positive correlation between BMI and obesity-related cancer risk. For each additional standard deviation of BMI (about 5 kg / m2), the risk ratios of the UK Biological sample Bank and the European prospective Survey of Cancer and Nutrition (hazard ratios, HR) increase by 1.10 and 1.16, respectively.

Scientists also found that overweight and obesity, as well as heart metabolic diseases, were associated with obesity-related cancer risk, and more importantly, overweight / obesity and heart metabolic diseases were also associated with total cancer risk.
