Shulou(Shulou.com)12/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, November 30 (Xinhua) General Motors' self-driving car division Cruise has recently encountered a number of problems. Due to previous accidents in self-driving vehicle operations, Cruise's self-driving car business has been completely suspended, and supervised driving with safety guards will also be suspended. The California Motor vehicle Administration (DMV) revoked Cruise's self-driving license, and Cruise co-founder and CEO Kyle Vogt announced his resignation.
After a series of debilitating setbacks, GM now plans to slash Cruise's budget.
In a recent executive conference call, Mary Barra, GM's chairman and chief executive, said that while Cruise would resume operations "in some capacity" in the future, any plans promoted by Cruise would be more "thoughtful".
Cruise will cut its budget by hundreds of millions of dollars next year, which is expected to lead to massive layoffs at the San Francisco-based company, which currently employs about 3800 people.
GM has invested billions of dollars in Cruise since it bought the company in 2016, but now Cruise has suffered a major setback.
CTOnews.com attached event history:
In August this year, ten Cruise Robotaxi cars suddenly stalled on the road, causing a traffic jam. A few days later, a Robotaxi rushed into the road construction area and got stuck in wet concrete, while a Robotaxi crashed into a fire engine at the intersection, causing passengers to be taken to hospital.
California's auto regulator announced on October 25th that Cruise's self-driving cars pose an "unreasonable risk" to public safety and "fail to meet the standards for road operation".
Cruise has suspended all driverless car operations in the public domain and will launch a recall of 950 vehicles.
Cruise is facing a number of federal investigations into the safety of its cars, including two cases in which driverless cars disobeyed pedestrians on the sidewalk.
On November 20, Kyle Vogt, co-founder and CEO of Cruise, announced his resignation.
