CTOnews.com, November 29, Google recently issued a press release announcing that, in partnership with Fervo, an innovative advanced geothermal power plant in Nevada has been put into operation and started to be connected to the grid, creating a method that is expected to be promoted in other regions and release clean geothermal energy.

Google says the use of geothermal energy is somewhat similar to the hydraulic fracturing used in oil and gas exploration, in which after drilling into deep rocks, the rocks are broken by injecting pressurized fluids to absorb geothermal heat from porous or fractured rock formations.

The technology could also help reap more benefits from existing resources and fundamentally reduce one of the biggest risks to geothermal energy: drilling for underground resources and finding them unusable, Fervo said. The video attached to CTOnews.com is as follows:

The Nevada plant generates a constant 3.4MW of energy and injects fluid about 8000 feet (2440 meters) below the surface through 3250 feet (990m) of horizontal drilling, with temperatures up to 191oC (376F).

Google is currently working on another larger project in Utah, Cape Station, which plans to be connected to the grid in 2026 and full power generation in 2028, which will be greatly expanded. Its goal is to generate about 400 megawatts of energy around the clock.
