CTOnews.com November 29 message,"display server" is the implementation of GUI interface required for the underlying framework, Linux has three display server protocols, respectively X (X11), Wayland and Mir, currently widely used X display server, developed by MIT in 1984, large amount of code, difficult to maintain, design is also "old."

Red Hat today released an official press release announcing that X.org will be removed from RHEL10, which will be released in the first half of 2025, and the Wayland protocol will be used by default.

Red Hat claims that about 15 years have passed since the transition from X.org, now more than 30 years old, to the Wayland protocol, and Red Hat has "played an important role" in this process, and Wayland is now recognized as a de facto window and display infrastructure solution.

Red Hat also claims that officials have been supporting X.org and Wayland, which in turn separates itself from the upstream community, and maintaining X.org has become an "unsustainable situation."

Red Hat CTOnews.com notes that Red Hat said it has previously collaborated with multiple hardware vendors, software vendors, customers, the visual effects (VFX) industry and upstream projects to extend the Wayland agreement to include:

Support for High Dynamic Range (HDR)/Color Management

Leading XWayland as a cornerstone for backward compatibility with X11 clients

Develop infrastructure to support modern remote desktop solutions

Libei was created to provide solutions for input simulation and capture

OpenJDK partners with Wayland

Red Hat says that the company already uses Wayland by default in most samples of RHEL 8 and marks X.org deprecated in RHEL 9, while RHEL 10 will use Xwayland for most X11 clients that have not been ported to Wayland, but users can continue to use RHEL 9 for the rest of their software lifecycle if they must X. org.
