CTOnews.com, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) Swiss robotics company Flybotix has launched a twin-rotor indoor UAV, ASIO, which uses a "cage structure" blade protection cover, claims to have longer flight time than similar four-rotor drones and is more collision-resistant.

According to the official introduction of ▲ source Flybotix, the traditional quad-rotor UAV has excellent flight stability and can hover in place to facilitate fixed-point close inspection. However, when the space is limited and the size of the UAV shrinks, the aerodynamic efficiency of the rotor system will gradually decrease, and subject to heavy batteries and inefficient propellers, the flight time of the quad-rotor UAV is also short.

Unlike quad-rotor aircraft, Flybotix's ASIO is designed with a coaxial propulsion system, with two propellers vertically distributed at both ends of the fuselage shaft. Officials say the design combines the mechanical simplicity of the drone with the flight power efficiency of the helicopter. When the drone takes off, the airflow between the two rotors is superimposed on each other, producing lift with less energy.

CTOnews.com noted that the ASIO ASIO claims to use an external bracket structure made of "aviation-grade material", but did not specify the specific material. The UAV has a flight range of 24 minutes, has its own infrared image sensor and 12MP camera, and can shoot 4K video.

In addition, ASIO uses an electromagnetic system to replace the traditional three-axis mechanical head, claiming to be able to collect information such as fuselage attitude, motion data and surrounding environment by carrying all kinds of sensors, and through "accurate calculation to simulate and balance the rotating force generated by the two rotors of the UAV, so that it has the same aerodynamic performance as a helicopter".
