In a statement issued earlier this week, Ford said it was very gratifying to confirm that the goal was to advance, but that production would be reduced on that basis, given the balance between investment, growth and profitability.

Annual output: 35 gigawatt hours originally planned, but now reduced to 20 gigawatt hours

Staff size: originally planned to be 2500, but now reduced to 1700

Ford's explanation is that the popularity of pure electric vehicles in the United States is slower than expected.

In February this year, Ningde Times and Ford announced a partnership to build a battery factory near Marshall, Michigan, to produce new lithium iron phosphate batteries. Ningde Times will license battery patented technology.

But in September, the Detroit News reported that Ford planned to suspend construction of the $3.5 billion battery plant. "We have suspended work and will limit construction spending to Marshall until we are confident of our competitiveness to run the plant," a Ford spokesman told the Detroit News. He added that no final decision had been made.
