On November 23, the third China Lingang International Semiconductor Conference with the theme of "creating the Core Future to build Ecology" was solemnly held in Shanghai. Sun Gang, vice president of Qualcomm, was invited to attend the conference and delivered a keynote speech at the main forum, sharing the basic technological value of 5G and AI in promoting the high-quality development of many industries. Sun Gang mentioned that the integration of 5G and AI has enabled a wide range of terminals, which will accelerate the digital transformation of various industries and become a "twin engine" for the growth of the digital economy. Dear leaders, distinguished guests and industry partners, good morning, everyone! I'm Sun Gang from Qualcomm. It gives me great pleasure to attend today's conference on behalf of the company to discuss with you how 5G and AI converged innovation can better promote the high-quality development of the semiconductor industry and help build a world of the Internet of everything at a time when the new round of technological revolution and industrial change.

In recent years, many development trends in different industries are driving the demand for leading technology. 5G continues to bring changes to more industries, AI scales on the edge, and cloud services benefit almost everything. We are entering the next computing era, the always-connected mobile PC is developing rapidly, XR has become a meta-cosmic terminal platform, the digital level of enterprises is constantly improving, cars are becoming "networked computers on wheels", and more flexible and agile factories of the future have also entered our vision.

Qualcomm has always been an important driving force in 5G research and development, commercial use and scale, and is constantly promoting the development of a new generation of mobile technology. At present, the third version of the global 5G standard, Release 17, has been frozen, which also represents the successful completion of the first phase of the evolution of 5G technology. Release 18 is in progress, and from Release 18 to Release 20 will form the second phase of the 5G standard, that is, 5G Advanced. On the basis of the existing 5G technology, 5G Advanced will support more extended features, such as RedCap for Internet of things terminals with lower complexity and expansion in more fields, enhanced industrial Internet of things, non-terrestrial network, etc., which will make 5G into a wider range of industries and applications.

5G and AI have become the "source" technologies that drive the next generation of innovation. With the blessing of 5G technology, the rich data generated by the Internet connection terminal can be shared to the cloud in real time, large-scale data analysis and machine learning become possible, and the terminal experience will also benefit from the increasing content, processing power and storage space in the cloud. At the same time, the terminal-side AI, which cooperates with the cloud, develops rapidly with the help of 5G, bringing higher privacy, reliability and lower latency, which has become a powerful supplement to cloud intelligence. The coordinated development of 5G and AI will help release each other's greater technological potential, give birth to revolutionary technological progress and application innovation, and accelerate the digital transformation of various industries.

Today, the power of generative AI is exciting. As a transformative technology, it will bring a wide range of applications, including search, content generation, productivity, coding, and so on, to create content through large basic models in seconds, upending the way we work, learn, play, and communicate. Generative AI has a very rich application field, the number of applications is increasing, and has a large number of users. According to incomplete statistics, from November 2022 to May this year, 79 large models with more than 1 billion parameters have been released in China, and new large models are still being released, and the number continues to grow. According to the industry's preliminary estimate, the market size of generative AI will reach 1 trillion US dollars.

With the rapid popularity of generative AI and the increasing demand for computing, the cloud economy will be difficult to support the large-scale expansion of generative AI. For example, it is estimated that using a search based on spanning AI, the cost per query is 10 times that of traditional search methods, and this is just one of many applications of spanning AI. In addition, running a generative AI model with more than 1 billion parameters in the cloud may require hundreds of watts of power, while running on the terminal side requires only a few milliwatts.

Running AI on the terminal side can bring global advantages such as cost, energy consumption, personalization, privacy and security. We believe that to truly unleash the full potential of spanning AI, the focus of AI processing needs to shift to the edge side, through a hybrid AI architecture to distribute and collaborate on AI workloads between the cloud and edge endpoints. Hybrid AI architecture enables a more powerful, more efficient, and highly optimized AI. Qualcomm is leading the realization of the hybrid AI vision of converging cloud and terminal through wireless connectivity, efficient computing and distributed AI, unleashing the unlimited potential of generative AI.

The rapid rise of generative AI is driving a new round of use cases related to content generation, search, and productivity, covering end categories such as smartphones, laptops and PC, cars, XR and the Internet of things. The hybrid AI architecture will enable generative AI to provide a new enhanced user experience in these terminal areas. For example, with generative AI, smartphones can become true digital assistants, allowing users to communicate naturally and get appropriate answers. PC users can use this technology to read or write emails, draft documents, and automatically create presentations. When driving a car, conversational in-car assistants can provide a variety of services to drivers and passengers.

Qualcomm's AI capability has enabled a wide range of products, including mobile phones, cars, XR, PC, Internet of things devices just mentioned, and Qualcomm has become a leader in terminal-side AI. At present, the number of listed user terminals equipped with Snapdragon and Qualcomm platforms has reached billions; in addition, hundreds of millions of terminals with Snapdragon and Qualcomm platforms enter the market every year. This ecological scale allows Qualcomm's AI innovation technology to be applied to hundreds of millions or even billions of terminals on a large scale, which is a great advantage in promoting the large-scale development of terminal-side AI.

The integration of 5G and AI will accelerate the digital transformation of various industries, become the "twin engines" to promote the growth of the digital economy, accelerate the opening of the digital future, and build a world of the Internet of everything.

Smartphones are the most direct way for consumers to feel 5G and AI today. Users want to enjoy extremely fast and stable connections anytime, anywhere, and expect mobile phones to bring professional mobile game experience and high-quality image shooting experience, so that smartphones can become professional devices such as "game consoles" and "cameras" in their hands. This year, we launched a mobile platform specially built for generative AI-the third generation Snapdragon 8 flagship platform and the new Snapdragon X Elite platform designed for the next generation PC experience, leading AI processing power and the fastest connection in the world, enabling seamless multitasking and new intuitive interactions, providing an accelerated end-side user experience in the upcoming new era of top computing.

The third generation Snapdragon 8 can run a generative AI model with up to 10 billion parameters on the terminal side, and run a large language model at a rate of 20 token per second. It takes less than a second to use Stable Diffusion to generate images on smartphones, bringing users a more responsive, efficient and secure AI experience. Snapdragon X Elite is the most powerful computing processor Qualcomm has ever built for PC. The PC experience is significantly enhanced with best-in-class CPU performance, leading terminal-side AI reasoning, and energy-efficient PC processors that support multi-day battery life. Snapdragon X Elite is designed for AI and supports a generative AI model with more than 13 billion parameters running on the terminal side. With the AI processing speed of 4.5x of Crydom, we will continue to expand our leading edge in AI.

5G and AI are important cornerstones of building a Smart Internet of everything world, while meta-universe is one of the important application scenarios that highlight the potential of 5G and AI. We believe that XR, that is, the mixed reality terminal, will become the entrance to the meta-universe and is a new generation of mobile computing platform with broad prospects. At present, Snapdragon technology and platform have enabled more than 80 XR devices, about 40% of which are built by Chinese manufacturers based on the cooperation between Qualcomm and Chinese partners.

Advanced technologies, such as 5G and AI, are also bringing unprecedented changes to cars. We see that the automobile industry is accelerating the digital transformation, and the car is becoming a "networked computer on the wheel". In the face of industry changes and opportunities, Qualcomm is focused on creating a platform that enables automakers to transform new services, applications and technologies. The launch of the Snapdragon digital chassis is an example of how we can build an intelligent ecology in the industry through open cooperation. Snapdragon digital chassis integrates many products and technology combinations of Qualcomm in the automotive field, covering connection, cockpit, intelligent driving and car-to-cloud areas. With comprehensive and rich solutions, Snapdragon digital chassis has been favored by partners and recognized by consumers. Since 2021, the Snapdragon digital chassis has supported more than 40 Chinese car brands to launch more than 100 models.

In the cockpit field, Qualcomm has carried out many years of research and development and exploration, and now it has launched four generations of Snapdragon cockpit platform, constantly refreshing the "ceiling" of performance and experience. Based on each generation of platforms, our partners continue to polish richer cockpit functions and applications. At present, the third-generation Snapdragon cockpit platform, which has been widely used in the industry, has become the preferred platform for many manufacturers to create differentiated in-car experience. The fourth-generation Snapdragon cockpit platform, using the industry-leading 5nm process, brings advanced features such as high-performance computing, computer vision, AI and multi-sensor processing, as well as low power consumption and efficient heat dissipation design. As the central processing center of the next generation vehicle, the fourth generation Snapdragon cockpit platform can better support the evolution of the industry to the electronic and electrical architecture of the regional system, and bring further optimized context awareness for the "adaptive" cockpit system. Models with the fourth-generation Snapdragon cockpit platform will be available to consumers one after another.

In the field of ADAS and autopilot, Qualcomm released an advanced and scalable open autopilot solution, the Snapdragon Ride platform, in 2020. The Snapdragon Ride platform brings high-performance and energy-efficient SoC, advanced AI accelerators, groundbreaking driving strategies and computer vision software stacks, scalable architecture, and open cloud services. Based on this, it can support automakers and first-tier suppliers to transform to an open, scalable and integrated architecture in a more convenient and cost-efficient way, and to support ecosystems to build differentiated products based on Snapdragon platform.

From this page of film, we can see that our ADAS product and technology roadmap has excellent scalability and scale. First, we created Snapdragon Ride Flex, the first scalable series of SoC in the automotive industry that supports both digital cockpit and ADAS. Its characteristic is that only a single SoC can support digital cockpit and ADAS / AD functions, which reflects our integration strategy. Snapdragon Ride Flex will redefine a high-performance, energy-efficient hybrid critical-level architecture to accelerate the industry towards the era of software-defined vehicles. At the same time, we will provide this capability for higher-level chips, which requires extremely high security, reliability and excellent integration, and even the most basic models can be equipped with the best products, which is very important to our customers. Of course, we will continue to introduce stand-alone products that support ADAS and infotainment systems, which are designed with the same underlying software platform, thus providing greater flexibility and reusability.

5G and AI also provide innovative ways to promote sustainable development. For example, in the energy sector, 5G and AI contribute to the development of renewable energy and distributed power generation, achieving energy conservation and efficiency, and gas and electricity consumption is expected to be reduced by 12%; in agriculture, Smart + connected drones can patrol and identify areas that need to be sprayed, and pesticide use is expected to be reduced by 50%. In the field of intelligent transportation, the application of honeycomb networking can help optimize traffic flow, improve fuel efficiency and reduce traffic accidents. Honeycomb-connected lanes and traffic management systems are expected to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20%.
